You are same as me matey.  i am crap at drawing and know i am too.  Makes me sick when i see what quality other family members can produce without effort.  Drawing is a real gift.

ROTFPMSL....... (@ Jim-Willy)

I'll tell ya what, don't beat about the bush, just shoot straight from the hip and let him have it!

Eyes are a bit pronounced on the drawing, and lips too.... but to be fair, shes got a face like a smacked arse anyway! tell her to cheer up next time.

Keep drawing m8y..... practise makes perfect and all that.... the first time I took the cogbox out of my Zuke it took all day, got it down to 40 mins now!

Well Dan I reckon you'd do quite well in St Ives (Cornwall)

colour is awful to work in as not only do you have to get a colour correct you then have to produce it in varying degrees of shadow and light.

Try working in pencil first that way you only have to worry about shadow and light

Don't be put off either - none of the best artists were ever appreciated until they were dead

Hi Dan,

Well done you for being brave enough to share your picture with us. I have to say that's not too bad for a 'person' picture, I find drawing people the hardest and for some reason once colour is added mine tend to look more on the craptastic side. Have a go using just a set of lead pencils, that way you can practice shadow/highlights etc etc ... also, keep it simple, think about how you use definition, the thickness of your outlining and detail lines ... don't over work a picture,  .... keep practicing though .. I've been drawing for years and I still don't think I've reached my best yet by far.

Here's a couple for you

First up is a watercolour ... I've tried minimum 'outline' lines in this ... her face is defined by the paint, there's only a minimum of pencil lines to mark out the nose for instance. This picture was stunning in pencil only ... I do love it with colour but getting the skintone right and to get the paint right to show depth and light was a real challenge.

(http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/2743/f7e3c1fed3ea9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Second up is a plain pencil drawing  .. pencil can be messy but can also give great results ... big tip for you is to use an eraser for the highlghts (and keep the finger marks and smudges at bay!) ... I've kept the detail to a minimum as I'm trying to show the passion in the embrace rather than anything else, if you look they have no real facial features.

OOH had to edit this to add ... if you like popart, buy yourself some acrylic paint then paint over your drawing .... use flat colour to keep it simple and heavy detail lines.

In this kind of style (I'm talking about his face not hers though ... )

Do you enjoy drawing?
Does it give you a "buzz"?
Or do you get stressed because you never get it right?

If the first the it don't matter what anyone else thinks of your drawings.
If the later then either lighten up or give up.

What matters is how it makes you feel.

i think anybody who can draw like you would be a shame to give up if its your confidence why not go to art class at night time if you can i go to college 3 evenings a week not for art though i can't draw don't give up a painting as it sounds like you do enjoy it and are 'good' at it.

Ok I've now composed my self.... Some of these comments have had me is stitches! Fudge you expecially...

Dan, If you like to draw you are 95% of the way there, don't worry about smiles etc look at the Mona Lisa, she has a face like a "smacked arse too"    yet is the most endearing picture painted ever!

Just remember, you don't need colour and you don't need too much detail to do a good painting or drawing

By the way... Pretty girl... she reminds me of some one I use to know.
