Title: 200 TDI engine convertion
Post by: joker777 on January 03, 2007, 17:59:52
What is involved in fitting a 200TDI engine into a 90 TD?

how long should it take? how much could i expect to pay for a good 200TDI? will i need to change anything else?
I would like to think i am a reasonably competent DIY mechanic but i have never worked on a landy before so i thought i had better ask the people who have, is there anything else i need to know that i havnt asked?
Thanks.

easy basicaly.
what vehicle is your donor coming form? if it is a defender tdi then everything will just swap, engine for engine, rad/intercooler for old rad.
if it is a disco 200, there are a few minor mods you will have to do. the disco flywheel housing needs a few of the stud and bolt holes re tapping and studs re positioning, dont worry all the holes are in the right places, you just have to tap where necesarry. the old TD mounts fit straight onto the tdi block so that is the engine physically in.
this is where the difficulties start. some of the disco parts, hoses etc are different in length, so new parts will be needed or fabricated. the turbo assy on disco engines is in completely the wrong place but can be used with a conversion downpipe. it will all go, and is definately worth the effort. that is the basics, and questions just ask! hope that helps.

how much should i expect to pay for a good one?

the best place to look is under the bonnet of a 200 TDI defender

only joking, theres a couple on that auction site at the mo, but you may have to travel to get them.

I thought it was easier to fit 300tdi discovery engine into 90 as engine mounts in correct place, and you can use the manifolds from the discovery, where the 200 tdi exhaust fouls the inner wing or bulkhead.

na its easier to fit a 200 disco engine as you use the TD engine mounts & it falls into place, you could throw the engine from 10 feet & it would land in roughly the right place for the mounts, the 300 engin sits ina totaly different place to the 200 & is slightly more work to fit

Thats how I did mine Mike, threw it in with a forklift!  Only problem we had was getting a spanner on one of the mounts, nearside from memory, but a bit of spanner bending solved that.  The Peugot 307 diesel air filter is working fine with a K&N element in it.  The temperature gauge reads high with the sender from a 2.5 petrol connected, but stays in the same place unless you really push it up a long hill.  The white faced bost gauge looks cool in the dash and was really useful for setting up the wastegate.  When I was setting it up had the boost at 1 bar at one point and it spun all four wheels changing up to second in the wet. I have just fitted an electric fan off of a Mitsubishi FTO.  Two speed so twice as cool.
