Well after my latest problems with my knee, been to the Drs again tonight, and his answer is that I have the start of (excuse spelling) Osteo arthritis, along with a VERY long name - that basically means I have a 'cracking' patella (knee cap)!
Also while I was there i was weighed - measured - and sat down for a lecture..
LOng and short of it is.. I am 5' 11" and My BMI is 41.5 :oops: :shock: and I HAVE to loose nearly 10 stones to be my PERFECT weight - or 8 to get to an acceptable level..
So as from next week I am on ORLISTAT a fat retaining pill.....
So NO
chips, crisps, margerine, curries, nuts, cheese....and the list goes on !
BUT if it goes the way I want at least i'll be able to say I did it - and also see my children grow old!!
So any LOW or NON fat recipes you have pm em to me ;)

Kinda know how you feel with knees, previous torn ligaments and fractured patella still give me trouble

I hate Doctors that shout their mouths off about BMIs there is no such thing as perfect weight applied by BMI.
To lose weight you have to eat less and exercise once you start exercising you'll start toning muscle once you start toning muscle you'll build muscle weight - size for size muscle weighs twice the weight of fat so losing weight goes out the window :roll:
Mind you bezzabsa you are errrrrrrr.... a bit over weight :D but I guess you didn't need anyone to tell you about that :lol:
You'll probably lose a stone even a stone and a half in a month and then your weight will probably plateau and that is when you'll need a diet that doctors seem to know little about. Go see your local gym staff and see whether they can help you.

Believe me - I knew I had put on weight -but didnt realise how much, in 2 years i have put on 28 kilos!!
The Doc didnt suggest the weight loss - I basically was told that in 10 years at my curent weight I would either be diabetic or dead! and after my heart scare 2 years ago it hurt to hear that, so he suggested losing weight - and because of my BMI put me on the tablets that absorb fat - and if I do eat it I had better be near to a toilet :shock:

good luck with the weight loss, its not the easiest thing and weight gain does have a way of sneaking up on you!
Do you do any exercise and will you knee let you? You may find a little bit of walking helps a great deal.

do as much as i can (not a great deal.. ) knee is a complete bugga at the mo...so hopefully 1 should help with the other!!

Can't say I agree with Mudlark - I ate less and lost nearly 3 stone. I took a bit of exercise but didn't develop muscle and hence weight.
If you're seriously overweight I'd guess that you should be able to shed weight quite well if you can manage to eat less! I was basically hungry for 18 months but it was worth it.
I don't think that going to the gym either suits everyone nor is the only way to lose weight but then I'm not qualified to comment and can only speak from experience. I must say 28 kilo is quite impressive!

Been using ORLISTAT myself and while using them with each and every meal I have lost weight, but be warned if you eat anything too fatty you will have a very sore ringpiece. :(bloodshot):
You will notice an immediate difference when you go to the toilet anyway, lots of fatty deposits round the pan and several flushes needed :(bigoops):

You have my sympathy with the O A.
I have had it for a few years, and it doesn't get any better. Now have pins in both knees, and creak a lot when walking.
Dropping some weight will help a lot, but watch the excercise. Anything that loads the knee will only cause more damage, even walking down hill can cause quite a lot of pain. (you have probably found that out for yourself).

I too can sympathise with you as I have been considered rather a large lady for more years than I can care to remember. I've tried the diets and those pills but I always reach a plateau where try as I might I can lose no more.
Last summer I started swimming while away for some meetings and really enjoyed it so much so that on returning home I joined a 'new 'gym in the area which had swimming pools. I go 3/4 times each week swimming and exercising in the water for at least 30 minutes each visit and also spend 30 mins on the treadmill once per week. I lost weight initially but once again have levelled out but and this is a big plus for me have not put any more on and best of all my blood pressure has dropped to its lowest for over 30 years and I may be coming off those tablets which is a big achievement.
There is arthritus in my family and I am terrified it catches up with me but I am managing to ignore the aches and pains and they are receeding.
Don't give up hope, eat a sensible diet do some exercising/walking and you will feel and look better and have a much more positive outlook.

I went through a stressful time and thought my weight loss was down to not eating. Soon found out I had an overactive thyroid problem ! I `ve lost 2 stone and down to a size 10 :lol:

Well at the age of 27 i have the same problem as you bezza, but in both knees.
Also have the weight problem, but for all those who say exercise is the answer, its not always that simple. The doctors have said to me that exercising an arthritic joint can actually make it worse and not better.

I worked with a big fatty called Frank, he was lathargic, tired grumpy, felt unwell, and weighed over 21 Stone

Its not a gimmic he genuinly wants to spread the word of how he did it.
I was well over weight and lost it by cutting out all the rubbish, crisps buiscuits etc, never eat low fat food, you need to change your tastes, to foods with no fat in.
When you go shopping dont go when you are hungry and dont buy any junk
Its not easy but you can do it and you will feel better and as you say it will extend your life, I had a suspected heart attack at 39 so had a full MOT, I am ok but its a wake up call.
We should all go to our doctors this week and have an MOT, Bloods, Blood pressure pulse,( PSA test depending on age), Mammogramme for the Ladies.
Things can be found and sorted before it becoms noticable.
So whats stopping you??????

I had an interesting experience recently.
We had a psychologist give us a days training on selling etc thru work.
One thing he did was the following:
He asked, 'If you had 100 points, and you had to allocate them to health, wealth, family.....etc how would you allocate them?'
Well, most of us put health at least 25 points, family and wealth also scoring high. He then asked how much time and money we use going to work. LOTS
How much time money with family, QUITE A BIT.
How much time and money spent making sure health was in good order(since it was important to everyone there is a fairly large degree)
Most of us did NOWT!
if its worth 25% of your lifes value, and you spend less than 1% chasing it, its never gonna happen is it!
At that point I joined a gym and started running. Im fitter, feel better, and lost about 2 stone. That day made an impact on me, and made me realise I was taking being alive and healthy for granted.
Good look with the diet, get fit, you'll never look back.

With regards to normal weight loss, a local acquaintance of mine managed to lose about 13st in under a year. He did it with walking and cutting all fat out of his diet.
He still keeps to the diet and exercises, but he went from being extremely overweight to being of a normal size.

Sorry to hear that Bez - I hope the diet goes well. I'd stay off anything more than walking while you lose the weight though. The extra stress on your body caused by too much exercise at this stage can be catastrophic.
I tore my medial collateral ligament while doing Muay Thai last year, and was told by both my instructor and my physio that I'm looking at 6 months recovery, and unless I want it to be a "life injury" to stick to light training only. :cry: This has put back me getting my Instructors licence until next year now.
As for diets - most people would find themselves losing weight and feeling more energetic if they cut out the junk/fatty foods, and the starch found in things like white bread, white rice, white pasta etc. Wholegrain all the way.
Everybody is different, and some diets are not suited to everyone. Good luck with it all.

Sounds like I ought not to be worried about being 5'8" & about 11stone then?
About 5 years ago when I was racing & training (again), I got from almost 12stone to 9stone in 3months.
All I did was cut out all the cr@p, no fried food & a fair bit of excercise.
The only problem was that SWMBO worked at the same Hospital at the time & she got fed up of people asking if I was okay - was I feeling well, etc....
After all, I did lose it quickly, but felt great, I could sprint (out of the saddle) up hills like Holme-Moss :lol:

Know how you feel Bez. I have just been put on meds for a racing pulse rate and got the lecture: fags, beer, fatty foods etc.
So I now have nicotine patch on my backside, and everything I eat is steamed or boiled. Beer? Reduced. :wink:
I certainly want to live longer, but I want some kind of enjoyment.

Well huge thanks for all the supportive comments (and No pee-taking either :shock: ) . will be starting the regime on monday - so I''ll try and post regular updates as to weight loss and also inch loss of the waist too (44" at the mo :oops: )..if i was REALLY brave - i'd post a pre diet piccy up....but I aint that brave :(:(:(:(

Its hard losing weight.
I'm 5' 8" and I ballooned to 18st when i was 25 and a newbie truck driver.
I gave up truck driving and the weight fell off me over 5 years.
I went down to 11st.
Then (silly me) went back to truck driving and i've put weight back on again.
I'm up to 13 3/4st now.
As of tomorrow i'm back out of the trucks so i should start losing weight again.

I wish you all the best with your change of lifestyle, Bez... because that's what it will be... don't call it a diet cuz dieting makes you fat (just ask all those who've failed!). :wink:
I also had a health scare last year... and have lost three stones and 8" off my waist (so far)! Our Practice Nurse put the fear of God into me... "stop living the way you are or you will die!" :shock: It's a bit of a leveller, isn't it? :roll:
She suggested I cut down on my intake of alcohol... not that I was a particularly big drinker... just BIG! So I gave it up completely... all I drink in pubs now is water! I'm a real cheap date! :wink:
I've found that water is the key... for me, anyway... I drink at least 2 litres a day... and can pee for England now!
We all know what we SHOULD be eating... chicken, fish, loads of vegetables, etc... but the 'bad' stuff is just so bloody nice, isn't it?
You CAN do it, Mate... and you'll find it's a LOT easier than you thought it would be too! The satisfaction you'll get from taking all your old 'fat' clothes to a charity shop is amazing, never mind the buzz you'll get from buying a new pair of jeans (or whatever)... and taking them home WITHOUT trying them on, cuz you KNOW they'll fit!! :wink: :lol:

I cant drink full fat milk know its like eating lard.Some things now seem too sweet.

well for what i drink its not worth changing - average 1 glass of whiskey a week..used to take 2 sugars in my tea/coffe - cut down to 1 and now have sweeteners (wife is diabetic)- if someone forgets and gives me 2 sugars its like syrup :x ..
