SHOCK HORROR :(scared):
Look at this from The Glasgow Evening Times.
DRIVERS of large 4x4 vehicles are more dangerous on the road than other motorists, says a new study.
They are more likely to be unsafe in traffic because they often drive with just one hand.
Researchers in New Zealand watched drivers of 4x4s and other cars on motorways and found those in the larger vehicles were 55% more likely to drive with only one hand on the wheel.
Gas-guzzling 4x4s have already come under fire for being environmentally unfriendly.
-
Yet more clap-trap :x
So we're more of a liabilty than;
Drink-drivers
Drug addled drivers
Uninsured (& probably unlicenced drivers)
MOT failures on the roads
-
Jeez...I need both hands to keep mine on one carriageway.
Damned car takes detours of its own if I only hold on with 1 hand!
-
Guess they dont have executive cars out there then. Or the chavs that drive with their knees. I know for a fact I quite often have just one hand on the wheel on the Audi but I'd NEVER drive the zook like that. Tramlines so much you need both hands :)
-
Oh look, another blanket statement.
If you drive a 4x4 you must also drive one handed.
Yep, that's because we're too busy answering the mobile phone, rolling a joint and trying to unscrew the cap from the bottle of JD we have between our legs to actually bother to concentrate on the road.
[Edited] - these people actually get paid to come up with this bu**s**t
Some of us and many of our relatives fought and in some cases died for freedom and peace.
-
So if I get a bently or fiesta Ill use two hands but I buy a 4x4 I will use one hand.
Yer I can see why that makes sence :? NOT.
Who pays these people?
Another news paper wanting cheap stories.

Of course I drive with one hoof on the wheel! The other one is busy stickin' two fingers up to the environmentalists!
Who writes this stuff?
cheers

More bullsh*t -how many b*w drivers do you see everyday talking on their mobiles?
Idiot in a Vauxhall Zafira thingy passed me the other day (going opposite way in town) phone in one hand fag in the other!!! [expletive deleted]!
-
yeah but that report comes from a country where folk throw themselves off bridges attached to kinetic ropes.....why???
-
i would drive one handed but while having my mobile phone wedged between my shoulder and my chin, and trying to use my electric shaver with one hand, i'd spill my coffee if i drove one handed, thought that was what my knees were for ? :?
-
Just another attention grabbing generalised headline to sell papers.
I am more likely to drive my 2wd vw van with one hand as it doesn't have power steering and is rock steady, the zook has power steering and doesn't take much movement of the steering wheel to shoot me off into the ditch, so its two hands on that.
-
Good God, what is the world coming to when you can't even drive your disco eating a big mac meal with banana milkshake without it offending someone!!
-
I would love to have a job and be paid to sit at home making this up.
I take my hand off the wheel to change gear so how is it dangerous if I drive with one hand? What about if you only have one hand? You are still allowed to drive then so whats the difference?
I bet the people that conducted this "Study" were parked half way up a hill and as the "4x4's" were passing they were changing down a gear!
-
One Hand.... What crap LOL Its when you steer with you knees that the problem LOL

It was in the Daily Mail too with a chance for reader comments.

Don't know if they're being edited but I know a few pro 4x4 comments that have not appeared (censored?)

More open minded objective and fair journalism from the Daily Mail. 4x4s are just easy pickings. It's not that 4x4 drivers feel higher up and 'superior', it's that drivers of cheap old knackered cars feel inferior. Quite rightly so!
What about 20 year old normal cars? Plumes of exhaust fumes, old brakes, bald tyres, thick chav drivers, no airbags, seatbelts like old rubber bands... I'm getting wound up!
I bet fewer accidents are caused by 4x4 drivers than most others.

Hahaha too right same here...and mine gets 7.5mpg less than my 1.3 polo gt used to so hardly gas guzzling either. I wish people would find a worthwhile cause to fight instead of going on about 4x4's.
-
I very seldom use two hands when driving, why do you need to, unledss you are travelling too fast.
Same on the bike, i only use two hands on the bars when I am riding quickly, cruising around at the speed limit, there is little need for both hands. :?
-
I drive 1 handed all the time. I find using 2 hands very hard to do for some reason.
Most challenging thing is to eat a McD's meal. top tip hear is to ask for 4 straws so you can link them together to drink ur drink in the cup holder and put chips into lid of burger case as then it sits neetly in your lap. an auto is better than a manaul for obvious reasons!!! Only joking mr pc plod. those kind of meals are gross!
But when I was a postie driving down certain long driveways it was easy to clamp a bottle of squash between your legs and have a few gulps and lid back on. 1 drive way had such bad tram ways that the van sat in the rust an pootled down the drive by itself. No steering required. No other cars around. Ideal time to fill in the van log book!!!
I know driving 1 handed isnt big or clever and certainly not funny but if its on private land then hey, why not! If you have a firm grip on the wheel too and the other hand isnt doing anything to stop you quickly gripping the wheel incase there is a reason to then whats the prob? 1 hand HAS to be better than no hands or 1 hand holding fire ( a ciggarette) or a phone?
Oh well. I will find someone to pay me to sit on me back side and think of a questionarre to think up. I may do it on people who drive cars with wide wheels kills more toads and frogs each year. That ought to do it
-
BTW
who does the stupid shuffle steer these days? Only time I have ever used it is with non powered steering cars like when I had my old series 3 landy. On tight corners like car parks etc you couldnt physicaly move the wheel 1 handed!
-
They havn't published my comment yet, I suspect they won't........ made me feel better sending it thoe.

No new comments since yesterday evening and I know of at least 4 people who have submitted pro 4x4 comments since then.

Mmm what a suprise, as soon as any pro 4x4 comments are sent in the subject miraculously dissappears :x :x :x

same here... left elbow on the rest, right elbow on the door ledge. left hand on the wheel, right hand picking my nose or drinking coke. Thats how they're meant to driven isnt it?
-
Nope sorry. Hands wrong way round.
Correct with right elbow on window and left on arm rest but right hand should be on wheel and left arm to pick your nose, change radio station, gear etc etc.
1 top tip here. in a disco where the hi-low gear knob is, if you cut your sarnies in half length ways they fit perfectly infront of the gear lever leaning against dash. you can get 4 sarnies in there. If you want toasted sarnies put them over the auto box lever area. warms them up a treat on a long journey. amazing how hot the light bulb gets under the P,R,N,D,3,2,1 filters

Posted my comments tonight. :!:

BTW
who does the stupid shuffle steer these days?
Driving instructors and driving students/pupils or whatever those like me are called who are under driving tuition.
You can't shuffle steer my 2A at crawling speeds.
-
you only need to get the hang of it to pass your test. i stopped doing it 30mins after passing my test. (thats how long it took me to get home on the bus from test station to my car!!!)
Being a postie I also managed to get the nack of doing palm steering from lock to lock very quickly. means you can have 1 had on gear lever doing reverse then 1st and back quickly while turning the wheel fast. can turn around in alot smaller spaces than when using shuffle steer!!!
I can go back to shuffle steer for driving tests if needs to be. (passed 2 more tests since driving test) (damn non grand father rights license  )
Good luck with your test.

Decided several months ago that that paper is not worth reading even when someone else paid for it.
It is the most inacurate biased publication known to man kind. We are not the only group to suffer their lies.
I advise people not to buy this publication and would suggest that everyone else does the same.
For acuracy the sunday sport is better.

Have you seen their sample size? 1,200. Total. So, allowing for comercial vehicles(*), normal cars, etc, we are looking at a sample of what, 300 tops? And on a motorway as well, which ain't exactly representative of normal driving either.
What confuses me is why anyone with half a brain would give credance to such groundless arse to begin with. But people clearly do.
*=and when was the last time you met a transport driver who didn't have to eat his dinner and fill in his logbook and read his maps on the road simply to get there on time?
Edit:
Submitted the following comment. I am clearly feeling grumpy this morning.
------------
I quote:
"Maybe they are more likely to take risks simply because they are less intelligent than cyclists or people who own small cars."
"Typical selfish response from a SUV driver"
"Taking the most astonishing risks with their 4x4s"
"Unless you are a farmer AND drive off road you simply don't need a 4X4." (my emphasis)
"It's the arrogance of 4x4 drivers"
And
"No one is having a go at people who use their 4x4"
Every single one of which is a lie. I am sorry, but if you can't be bothered to read a discussion before contributing, and if you do not have any evidence to support your opinions then please keep them to yourself. A sample size of 1,200 is proof of nothing more than half a wasted afternoon. Goodbye.

I don't expect it will get published.
