Do automatics have a diff lock, if so why isn't mine working. Any one got any ideas!!!!

in what way do u mean isnt it working?
have u moved the transfer knob over fully to the left?
is the light coming on the dash?
have u tried jacking one of the front wheels from floor and trying to spin it?
if the wheel wont completely spin then the diff is locked and working :wink:
assuming that u have a 200 or 300 tdi disco that is ..
dont think the td5 has same way of locking diff but i dunno cos i dont have a td5 lol

I've got a 1996 300tdi automatic and this has a diff-lock. I just firmly push the small(high/low & diff-lock) lever across to the left and an indicator light near speedo comes on.
Got to admit that when i first bought this Disco I had problems getting it to engage, but crawled under the vehicle and found that the linkages for it were a bit siezed. Plenty of WD40 and moving of the lever helped greatly. Now make sure I put it in diff-lock at least once a week.

dont think the td5 has same way of locking diff but i dunno cos i dont have a td5 lol
Some Td5's have difflock, some don't - just to confuse matters, mine has the difflock instructions on the sticker on the dash, but the later transfer box - which doesn't have the 'spigot' on for the lever to attach to !

DO NOT TRY DIFFLOCK OUT ON TARMAC THOUGH.
If it engages on tarmac you could do alot of damage. I very nearly found out the hard way when I got my disco I put it in difflock as it said you can engage it at any speed as long as the wheels arent spinning and I was on tarmac. It scrubs big time and extremely hard to remove out of difflock as well.
The light that comes on in a 300tdi auto is in the top right corner of the dash and looks like an H and is orange coloured.

I have same problem as Jimbo, TD5 with difflock sticker but lever doesnt move over. fat lot of good.

If difflock lever does not move to the left it may be a borg warner viscous coupling that's fitted.
It senses when the axles are turning at diffirent speeds and locks/unlocks automatically.

ive never reall had any problems when spinning sticking it in difflock

Were the Borg Warner difflocks fitted on the TD5 03 model year? seems strange my car has the sticker that shows moving the lever over but doesnt actually move.....

I only have to do this to get it into high/low and not to get it into diff-lock!
Got to admit that I do occasionally have to go through the procedure of reversing the Disco back a few yards to disengage the diff-lock due to the diff-lock "winding - up".

The traction ability of the TD5 using the brakes/abs replaced the difflock. Land Rover brought it back again after 2 years I think, most 2002/2003 vehicles can be retro-fitted as the gubbins is still in the transferbox!

I never have to do that. Just push it acros into diff lock as and when needed and then back out of it again. Most of the time it goes out straight away but sometimes I have slow down slightly or take foot off accelerator to make it come out. Hi- low and low-hi sometimes I get into neutral but then if that happens I either give it a small rev or pop it into drive or reverse and then into Park again and it pops into low or hi. Never a mega issue tbh.

Me 2! Once I had to engage diff lock to get my caravan out of a bog that was supposed to be a camp site. Drove off the grass, down the windy lane to the campsite exit and remembered diff lock. Had to reverse car and van back up the windy lane to get it out. My reversing isnt bad but im not the best either. I wont be doing that again!!
