During discussions on another (Land Rover) forum, someone kindly posted this site link

Scroll down and open the BRM sound files & set the volume to LOUD!
There now, wasn't that good
it's surprising the noise a 1500cc supercharged V16 can make (that can spin the rear wheels at over 150MPH!!)

V 16 ???
I always understood it was an H 16 Any comment there ??
It was also a lot quieter than I expected. I was comparing it with a Matra V12 3 litre F1 car which hurt your ears more than a Frerrari V12 F1.

This brings back memories, I also have a CD somewhere of F1 sounds. Some years ago through family & work connections I used to get pit passes for the F1 GPs at Silverstone & Brand Hatch. It always struck me that the TV coverage does nothing to convey the fury in the sound of these engines close up. One of my other great memories/sounds are the Silk Cut Jaguars at Le Mans coming out of Tertre Rouge & flooring up the Mulsanne (before they emasculated it with those chichanes) - a glorious deep V12 roar.

No it's definately a V. I've got a cutaway drawing somewhere in a copy of (possibly?) 'Car'

Mmmmmmm! Nice!
I think the H16 came rather later:

We were doing some R&D on a much later Lotus F1 so had the opportunity to be with it when driven by Mika Hakkinen. When it starts up in the hanger, the noise is *unbelievable* Even with your fingures in your ears it hurt!

1950 about I'm thinking of.
Any chance of you finding that cut-away ?? Please

The web page says 1953, so not far out.
The H16 looks like mid to late '60's.

I know he wasn't going to be flat out, but his Goodwood lap was 1.33. I used to do standing start laps in 1.46 in a 1400cc modified MG Midget :D Hmm, those were the days.

Just watched the McLaren F1 (the road car) 'flat out' video, 392KmPH!!!, which equates to 243 in English

Without watching it, that'll be the Alan Decadanet snippet (He used to drive LeMans & F1, & presents aviation programmes on satellite channels)
How the camera man never moved is beyond me
