Does anyone know what engine oil i should be putting in a 8Valve injection vitara engine?
In the hand book it recommends 10 - 30 for the 16v but no mention of 8v

Let me know when you find out.
www.difflock.com
This has a very good oil section post your question there

10/30 or alternative 10/40 (moderate climate)
SH/A2-96
4.2L Engine+filter

10/40 is fine for 8v & 16v Vitaras but don't use a fully synthetic.

....... but don't use a fully synthetic.
Apart from the cost (!), why not? I would be interested to hear if there is any specific requirement for the Vitaras.
We went through this relating to the classic Mini some years ago and the outcome was that as long as the viscosity was correct, semi or fully synthetic will do exactly the same as standard oil, but retain it's properties longer. I spoke to Castrol and the chap was very helpful and came across as being totally unbiased. The letter we got from them is reproduced on our web site if it is of interest.

Bear in mind this relates to the BMC A series engines which are a much older design than the Suzuki unit. But the basic principals will still apply.
Personally, I just use basic oil and change it frequently.

I was told this by a guy in Bowetts Suzuki garage in Leeds.

Fair enough :)
I would be intrigued to know why he suggests this, though.

i got told that fully synthetic rotted the oil seals on older engines not sure if this is true just what i got told
