I have the 3 box exhaust on my 200 TDI 90 and I'd like to elimiate tow of the boxes - I think the 300 TDI exhaust had just one box, is that right? If so what's the part number please.

hi
well a 300 can have 3 boxes, but down pipe is fitted with 3 blot flange instead of clamp so it will not fit.
on my 300 i just run the small box on the back of the pipe just cut other boxes out and weld in straight pipe
little less back pressure and better note to

Thanks but I'm convinced that there is one system that is one box only. The three box I have has the big spark arrestor at the back which makes it tricky to cut and weld.
Maybe someone else will be along shortly?

Try http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/exhausts_display.php?txtmodel=90&Submit=Next&txtmake=LAND+ROVER and select models. Its a general thing but may help?

There is...
One large centre silencer only on some 300tdi 90's and some Wolfs. I did find the part number, but can't find it off hand. The rear pipe has no silencer, just an over axle bend.
Fitted to some earlier spec 90's.... but later ones had the two box system - i.e one large centre silencer, and the curly rear resonator box.... some 300Tdi's also have a CAT (well a filter) in the turbo downpipe.
As mentioned, the turbo downpipe is very different, as are the exhaust joining clamps (I think... is late!) - which means you would have to do a bit of cutting and shutting.
On a 200tdi, the other option is fit the Td spec rear silencer... which is a straight through rear set up (with a small silencer).... better than the 200tdi and later 300Tdi.
Personnaly I'd run a Td rear silencer/resonator and cut out the large centre silencer and replace it with straight through pipe.
This is the set up I used to run on my 200Tdi (actually, is now fitted to my mates 90!!)
Or the other option, which I started to do but never finished was to fit a Td5 exhaust which has the benefit of being a larger bore, and made from a variety of stainless steel. It will fit with a bit of cutting and shutting... I found it easier to make the turbo down pipe from scratch.
Again, if you fitted a Td5 exhaust I'd do away with a centre silencer, and just run the rear box.

You'd suggest the TD setup and eliminate the centre box then?
It's the twiddly bit over the axle that is tricky. I expect I could weld the straight through section OK but twiddly bits ...
Also I don't want to wreck what I've got and leave myself withouut a silencer at all - and I could see that happening!

Yep... I'd run a Td rear silencer... as the silencer is a straight through type, rather than having the more complex 200 and 300 tdi design that does a double pass through the rear silencer - and thus is quite restrictive.
I think the centre silencer is virtually the same for the Td and the 200Tdi so I'd just cut the large centre silencer out, and replace with a length of straight pipe... and then fit a Td rear box - which includes the over axle bend and does away with the smaller silencer that some 200tdi's have in between the centre box and rear tailpipe.
I hope that makes sense... sort of.
