Title: Transfer 'box trouble
Post by: doris on January 15, 2007, 16:54:49
Hi all

1st begging post on this forum............  so here goes.......

Coming home from work tonight the transfer box jumped out of gear on over-run. Dropped into neutral (auto box) and coasted to slow speed, thunked it back in, no problem, but the lever seemed to go further than usual to get it in. It did it again 3 times on the way home so I stripped off the handle, gaiter, foam etc and cut halfway around the rubber gaiter underneath to have a look.

It works fine rocking back and forth between hi and low on the drive, but the lever has to be pushed all the way until it is touching the metal surround to get it into gear, especially into high range.

Is this a matter of a linkage needing adjusting somewhere or is the t-box dieing??!!

I have been underneath but can't see where the linkage goes. Its a Disco' v8 Auto.

Any help please??

Damon

sounds like the linkage that sits on top of the transferbox needs adjusting

Or the grub screw has worked loose and the selector fork has slipped on the shaft . . . . .

Thanks chaps........  that doesn't sound too disastrous.  How do I get at these linkages.....  I can't see them from below and can't get to them from above!

All help appreciated

Have a browse at this site (http://home.twcny.rr.com/eeibooks/rover/discodifflock.htm) for enlightenment/illustrations

Depends on the problem . . . . you can get limited access from the console tunnel inside the motor. Strip out the tunnel console and remove all the foam and sound deadening material.

Eventually you will find a rectangular cover plate, which may or may not be removable, depending on whether anyone has been in there before. Drill out the spot welds or rivets and hey presto, you have access to the top of the box.

The link rods run over the top of the back of the gearbox to a lever on top of the long rectangular housing on the top of the t/box where the selector and rod are fitted. Access from underneath the vehicle is both blind and very tight for hands. The high/low selector does sometimes slip on the rod and all that holds the selector in place is a small grub screw.

Can be done though . . . good luck . . . . unless anyone has an easier way they want to share . . . .

Thanks Tyke

I will take a look.  I can get a rebuilt t box for £350, then £120 to fit it.  This sound reasonable if all else fails?

Sounds cheaper than some I've heard of. I'd have a check to see if it's something easily fixed first. We've done three so far this winter with the slipped selector fork . . . . all the guys were convinced the transmission was shot.

You wouldn't be the first to drop half the transmission only to find it could be sorted very quick and easy with a screwdriver, a couple of spanners  and an hours effort

Good s/hand t/boxes run about £100+ round our way . . . . a recon would probably be more reliable if you can trust the source.

Not 'arf... feel I can tackle my own now...! (Not staying in diff lock and no... it aint the light switch as it bangs now and then if transmission is undere load when diff lock decides to go in/out!)

Keeping an eye on this thread!

Yes, it's a very good site, even though it's American in origin

No, surprisingly not!

They're not all like the hillbillies from 'Deliverance', or Californian air-heads' either

We have a Doctor who's from Utah at the moment & he's an exceptionally nice guy (& not 'super-sized' either  )

Yeah... I spent a fortnight hitch hiking around New England in the late 80's and I never had a bad experience.

Course, the accent helped!  :P

For once I can't wait for the coverage of the next presidential election... ANYBODY but dubla! The poor Americans won't survive "four more years" of his reputation!

As mentioned earlier - the grub screw thing happened to me - difflock worked, but the transfer box wouldn't select anything other than high range, the lever rattled around like an egg whisk.

I took it to a transmission specialist in Lee Mill, Devon, and £300 later they told me about the wole grub screw thing   But still, I had them do a slave  cylinder whilst they were down there, and give them their due they collected it from work in the morning on a low loader, and they'd been in, repaired the selector fork (slipped off due to lack of grub screwy goodness), put a new slave cylinder in ((went on the way to work), and sorted all the EP90 levels in both gearboxes, diffs and axles, and had it delivered back to my work at the end of the day!! Now that's what I call professional.

sometimes £500 is money well spent...

Steve.

Right.......

I have the centre console and associated foam, gaiter etc......

I can see the linkages for both diff-lock (which has never worked incidentally) and the high low mech.  Everything looks in its place and no clean metal on rods to suggest any slippage.  The lever just travels too far forward and back before engaging any gear.......  then when the gearbox moves slightly under decel, the lever hts the gate and pops out.

I CANNOT SEE A GRUB SCREW however, and can't see a reference to it in Haynes or Rave CD.

Where is it please??

UPDATE......

Berate me for not checking first........(awaiting beratement).........

....  but I have no low range at all!!  (my excuse is that the non standard, slightly protruding stereo led me to believe that it was a lever travel issue)

The mechanism seems to click into the low position, but there is no drive.  The 'click into low is much 'soggier' into the low position.

I presume this meens the 'box is duff??

Any advice appreciated.......  as you may have guessed; I am not a natural at this!?
