Post by: j99mud on January 20, 2007, 15:57:36
well defra are at it again this time they are cutting many millions from british waterways, and as I live on the canal, well in a narrow boat on the canal it would be great if as many of you guys as poss would sign the petition here http://www.saveourwaterways.org.uk to try and preserve the waterways and part of our heritage

Hi James

Have signed mate, agree with you we need to preserve the canal's for the future, have had a few pleasant canal weekends, so relaxing when I am not crashing into locks   , think I have got the hang of it now.

Cheers

I am beginning to get cheesed off with this country i really am! Seems to me unless you sit in your house, go to work and return straight back after work to resume sitting on your ass, and just pay tax upon tax for doing nothing they want to ban it!

Every pastime seems to being banned cos someone feels it would be a good idea! ...and without researching it either! And thats what gets me! And as soon as Gordon Brown gets in it will get worse cos he does as he is told anyway despite the facts pointing the other way!

Cant wait to move to a sane country! I cant speak french, but at least they dont get walked over like us brits! And they get much more for their money over there too! You can actually see where its being spent despite the beaurocracy!

James , sorry to hear what they are trying to do.

Just to play devils advocate i wonder how many canal users supported the plight of greenlanes? 10, 100 maybe. It just goes to show that everyone looked after there own intrest at the time it could have made a difference to me.
Hope it achieves something, if it doesnt i just hope they target those pompous bobble hatted pratts that campaigned against us.

theres more to it than just money, canals are part of our heritage, more than boaters use it , cyclist, walkers ,fishermen. also used for a natural flood defence and a means of transporting water, i would think telford, jessop, brindly and brunnel would have a few things to say to our goverment. aparently when blair got to hear about it his attitude was i am aware but not prepaird to do anything.theres already some probs with the canal network due to spending cuts, theres been one breach this year and the floor is breaking up in netherton tunnel which there is great concern over. i'll be there on the next protest meet . alan.....

I am a volunteer with wrg (waterway recovery group) to restore the canals so this is a big issue for me too.

I spend as much of my spare time restoring them to then find BW cant afford to look after the ones that we have restored due to DEFRA. It is barmy.

I signed it ages ago. I hope they give BW money again to look after them.

Are you going to the national festival in St Ives on the R Neme in august bank hols? If so I will be there car parking hopefully. I will be there anyway. Would be good to meet up.

Sign away folks.

All signed up, James, and forwarded to everyone I know!

Water is, and will always be crucial to our well-being, whether living on it, travelling on it, or just enjoying it (not to mention drinking the stuff!)

All the best

Rich

James

The National waterways festival is on the Ouse at St Ives not the Nene ...most boaters will have to use the Nene to get there

After many years using the Canals and Rivers of the UK Lets hope thay dont decay into disrepair

I have signed
