Fortunately they say it wouldn't be in place until 2011 at the earliest.  Also fortunately for me is that I'm outside the congestion zone (just!).  :D

Well, the list is growing of places not to visit.

London, Edinburgh, Bristol and now Manchester.
Oh well, no great loss really.  :D

personally i dont mind travelling on the train, as it means there are no traffic jams and im not worried about my car being prange..

BUT

there is a severe lack of stations

i live more or less on the west coast main line.. and the line passes through the town i work in (newton le willows)

but if  i wanted to get to NLW from here i would have to catch one train from euxton to wigan, another from wigan to warrington, and another from warrington back to NLW.

or
chorley to manchester piccadilly then back to NLW

makes no sense!

there is no regional train that goes direct from euxton to warrington, and no hope in hell to stop in NLW (different lines)

:(

Which government was it that was so short-sighted that it got Beeching to scrap a railway network that, if it was still in place, would have made congestion charging unnecessary?
Also, no government should ever have sold off the railways.

Even if the lines had been kept open and some of the stations that were closed converted to halts then it would have been better.

i think beeching did it cos the government's coffers were being emptied and britain had no money after the war.

but thats how i see it dunno how accurate it is though
