Right, Disco1 200tdi, clutch was supposed to have been done just before i bought it a year ago, however, i only have to breath on the pedal and the clutch slips..... really not looking forward to fitting a new clutch, i'm thinking unbolt the engine, and slide it as far forward as possible, in order to get to the flywheel, the hoist i have won't go high enough to get the motor right out.... but i reckon that taking the rad out and moving it forwards should just about give me enough room....
So, is my clutch going? and will my idea work.??

If your clutch is slipping then yes it is dieing.I have heard people move the engine forward though i prefer to take the gearbox out as in my view it is easier(approx 2 1/2 to 3 hours).At the end of the day it is down to your own preference and the equipment you have.

It's not actually slipping just yet, only if i put a little pressure on the pedal, which tells me it won't be long....... the main reason for moving the engine, is that the gearbox just weighs too much, i don't have access to 2 or 4 post ramps, i'll have to do it basically on the ground, i do have an engine hoist, hence my thoughts......

when i have done clutches i have done them on my back on the floor, all you need is an extra pair of hands and a couple of trolley jacks.If you put one jack under the gearbox whilst you remove the crossmember and then support it with another jack or axle stand then move the jack under the plate where the crossmember sits i will hold it fairly level(you could strap the gearbox to the jack if you wanted) then slide the transmission back enough to replace the clutch ect. and then slide it back in.As you said it is heavy but if you have help for this bit and are careful you shouldn't have any problems....

Alrite Ron, I did the clutch on mine about 2 months ago and after a lot of deliberation i decided to take the gearbox out.......big mistake! We got it out fine but as a mate and i were clambering around under it trying to get it back in, it fell off the jacks about 4 times and i ended up taking the gearbox back out of the truck, putting it in the boot and towing it to a nearby garage to be fitted back in. If I had to do it again, I would definatly move the engine. Just my view, and yes, your clutch is definatly going matey! :(

Thats exactly the problem that i don't want to have, i do have a workshop big enough to get the truck in, and work on it, therefore i won't have any time restraints on me, but, i did the gearbox in my Impreza, and when that came out, it literally fell on my chest, boy did that hurt..... and the Disco box is a lot heavier!!
So, it'll be a proper AP clutch i think, BUT not until it's actually slipping whilst driving along without my foot on the pedal..... i didn't think i would have to do this job, it was apparently done just before i bought the truck, a mere 5k ago....!!

I've fitted expensive clutches to the V8 and TBH they don't seem to last long before I get the same scenario. I'd take the engine out too because that's the equipement I have and I hate a***ing around underneath something that heavy. TBH I migh pay someone to do it next time, oh no, hang on, I'm fitting an Auto next time aren't I :roll:

I've fitted clutches to most makes of LandRover - the Disco/Rangy is easily the hardest, due to the solid floor plan. I've always just moved the gearbox back - there is a rik that the gearbox could slip off the jack though, and you have to be careful as they are very heavy. There are steps you can take to minimise this risk - level ground, position of the jack in relation to the direction the gearbox will be moving, etc etc. You can also rope a cradle across the chassis rails and under the gearbox as an added precaution to prevent nasty accidents. I'd imagine that you would have to remove the radiator in order to gain enough room to replace the clutch. Never done it that way myself - you would still have the fun of undoing those awkward top bell housing nuts :evil:

I would aim to take the rad out, and pull the engine into the grill opening.... as far forward aspossible.....
I tell you what, when i do it, i'll take loads of pictures... and post them up in a project type thread....!!

That would be good, I'd like to see how it's done.
