French Ignore New Smoking Ban
The French carried on regardless of the tobacco ban which came into force yesterday (01/02/07)
The country's 15million smokers were officially forbidden to light up in workplaces, schools, stations, airports, hospitals and other 'closed and covered' public places.
but the threat of a £48 fine had little effect, and Gauloises and Gitanes were being openly smoked almost everywhere.
'Smoking is part of our culture,' said Jean Burens, 26, as he lit up at Republique Metro station in central Paris.
Natalie Minos, a 21-year-old secretary, continued to smoke as she entered her office in the Marais area. She said: 'The French are very good at ignoring laws they do not believe in.
A UK ban on smoking in enclosed public places comes into force on July 1. From The Daily Mail 02/02/07
'The French are very good at ignoring laws they do not believe in.'
I just we were the same

Even as an ex smoker I agree.
Ok, None of us like to go to the pub and come home stinking but there are plenty of places that have non smoking areas and we have coped like that for a long time.
THis country is getting ridiculous with all these new laws that seem to come in.

My view of the French is changing. It would be interesting to see if they reacted in the smae way towards the 'black box in your car idea'.

I have a few french friends and my brother is engaged to a french girl, they are extrememly hospitable. The best thing about the french is their ability to do exactly what they want. They have 2 hour lunches and small villages virtually close around this time.
If you go to the village square its like stepping back in time where everyone comes out in the evening.
If you fancy a holiday there try Gites they are great and you wont find a warmer welcome than in the smaller towns...Paris is a different story but then how friendly is London??????

but... the french economy is totally stuffed from what I was reading, to the extent of catastrophic failure predicted by 2010 ...
guess they might want to do something about that one...
not to mention the riots ..
Hmm :)

Moving to France doesn't ameliorate the problem we have in this country, when we have laws being expedited in Europe where the masses totally ignore them if they don't agree with them.
We on the other hand bow and scrape cap in hand to the Government and thank them profusely for introducing yet another useless European based law, before going meekly to throw ourselves into the jaws of the great British justice
We have the choice, as I see it: we either embrace Europe wholly and it's strange customs, including the ignoring of stupid laws or we pull this country of ours out of the EC and rebuild it to our specifications
