Whats the alternatives to Jate rings as recovery points at the rear of the Defender?
Any pictures or suggestions greatly appreciated..........G
-
I'll be using the tow ball if I need to for now, have added one Jate ring, but considering fabricating something to attach to the tow bar, not too sure what yet though.
There is a guy making ones that attach through the jacking points of the rear cross member, can be found on Ebay

Tow bar, rear winch or recovery ring bolted to/though the rear corssmember :)
-
Tow ball attached to rear x member with a spreader plate on the back is what i have........
-
I have been looking at those swivel recovery eyes at about thirty quid a go but am not sure if I`ve got the room on the rear crossmember to get two on. I have a towbar and the electric socket as well. Thanks for all replies up to now.... :-k

Another option is one of these from LRS Off-Road..

I've got a NATO hitch (still) waiting to fit...
Anyone know what spec of bolts I need (thread, length etc)?
Planning to get a removable tow bar eventually when they've been type approved for towing - seems pointless getting a tow bar that I can't legally use!
Cheers

Thanks for all the replies lads.....keep um coming.
My problems and thoughts as follows.....
I have a Dixon bate tow ball and pin fitted on a plate at the moment (Two bolt Version), this is useful because I do occasionally tow an ordinary trailer with the tow ball.
The Nato hitch is obviously good and heavy duty but I don't pull a Sankey etc.
I like the idea of the loops like the equipe one and the swivel eyes but I cant keep my tow ball as well as have them.
What to do?....................

Just done a search on eBay, but can't find anything... Anyone seen any anywhere else? Think they may be better than relying on the NATO hitch fitted through my tin foil TD5 rear crossmember

These are the ones I have seen

Can't say if they are any good or how strong they are but if someone esle can comment it doesn't seem a bad price for 2

They look like a good idea, but it doesn't look like he's sold any (done a completed items search...).
I'd be interested on any comments... Anyone seen review in the magazines?
I've asked the seller a question about it, but wondered if anyone else had seen anything...
Perhaps I should ask Jerry Thurston. Anyone know how to contact him?
Cheers

I made these. I made them from stainless. The push through from the rear. They are 1 1/8th of an inch through the hole. About 6" long in total.

Would have thought a spreader plate at the back of that crossmember would have been a good idea.....?
-
The problem is, the tube protrudes past the flat of the rear x member. Otherwise i would have. You only need to stop the pin puling through the tube.

Arnt NATO hitches M12x150? :?

Well, I bit the bullet at Donnington today, and have bought a pair of the shackles that go through the cross member. Not too difficult to fit (took about 15 minutes), and there's just enough clearance between the rear fold down step and the bumperettes.
They look pretty good (although I've removed the shackles themselves so they don't get thieved  ).
I'm not planning on using them for anything too serious, and I'm still planning to fit the NATO hitch as a second option.
Now all I need to do is get some slots ground into the front steering guard so that the JATE rings fit!
Photo's to follow when I get round to it!
Cheers
Ben
