Title: Which size is best
Post by: smith335 on February 06, 2007, 20:07:09
looking at changing my tires on my disco.
the ones on now are 255/65/16
should i stick to this size or go for 235/70/16.

what are the pros and cons of thiner or fatter tires.
do fatter tires handle the road better?
do thiner tires have less drag and help improve mpg?

the only pro i can see for going to 235/70/16 is that they do the bfg ats in that size.
any comments?
cheers

Fat tyres float on mud
Fat tyres are over-tyred for the rims and will not turn-in as well on the road
fat tyres cost too much

so better going for the 235/70/16 then?

Fat tyres:
look really cool
cost a lot but worth it
dont turn aswell but worth it
          8)
haha
ive got 235/70R16 bfgmuds, they are great! really impressive on and offroad. the biggest tyre for the standard disco aparently. iv'e already bigged them up tonight hahah, check out the other thread called tyres.

im keeping the tyres and suspension as it is untill i get enough for the big wheel conversion with lift and 35X12.50 tyres. i do like wide tyres

my disco is bog standard and it came with the 255/65/16 on.
it is a td5 so not sure if that makes a difference.

fancy some new BFGs ATs in 235/70/16
would i notice much differance going to the smaller size?

if i stick to the 255/65/16 i cant get the BFGs only general AT2s
 what should i do?

Do you do most of your driving on road or off road :?:

Thinner tyres are better on road as they have less drag, less road roar and increase MPG but don't handle as well as fatter tyres off road. Its up to you which ones you get but you need to look at what driving you do and then go from there.

most of my driving is on road, but i do tow alot ,in and out of fields etc.
and down the odd green lane when taking the dogs out.

i have road tires on now 255/65/16 and ive had probs with traction  a couple of times when towing in fields.
thats why i thought i would go to ATs.

i not sure if the size of my rims will effect what size i can go to.
i have 8 inch alloys.
thanks for your help chaps look forward to more comments.
cheers

here's what i said on another thread...

"i would really recomend the BF Goodrich Mud Terrain, quite a few pennies but well worth it. amazing offroad and great onroad, and they last for ever. they arnt loud at all and can do the speeds. they hold the road really well aswell. i was in a fencing firm, and they only used these tyres on all their trucks, doing mega miles on road, and they would last 6-7 years or more. the only time we got stuck with them was with a 3ton trailor ina really sloppy field. ive got em on my disco now and really impressed so far. i got mine from tyretorque.com and thought they were the cheapest for £93 i think, but MM4X4 might be abit cheaper..."

good luck

Can get them cheaper than that round here . . . . try 'Sowden Tyres' . . . Mark will is usually open to a deal once you have had a few off him

That said, I've worn out two full sets of Colway 265/75 MT's in less than a year . . . . next time I'll probably go BFG purely for the road life . . . . . and probably up a size more as well

Cut a sidewall badly last time out laning up the Yorkshire Dales a couple of weeks, sharp limestone rocksright down to the canvas so changed it for the spare when I got back on tarmac . . . . didn't hurt too much at ony 40 or so quid. Would have been gutted at 100+ for the equivalent BFG.
