Title: Axles - again
Post by: Matt_H on February 07, 2007, 15:08:25
I've got a rear disc braked axle on my early 90 - I've no idea what it's from as it was there when i bought it.

I've just a pair of second hand 200 tdi axles.  The rear is not needed, however as I've got a ncie disc based one, however I was wondering if I'm likly to have any interchangeable parts between the two rears (i.e. keep some bits for spares)

The rear has mountings for an anti roll bar, is not a salisbury for sure.  I've a receipt in my big folder for "early range rover/discovery pads" is this a clue as to what it could be or a totaly red hearring.

I was told by my local landy place that it is a defender axle because it has the same little rubber caps on the ends as those on the front, and not a disco/rangie one.

So if it's a defender 90 then isn't it gonna be a 23 spline diff with no interchangeable parts?

Defender 200 TDi were drum braked weren't they? so I'm thinnking it's a bitsa already.  The 200 TDi hlafshafts are meant to be very strong so perhaps they are sat inside a Rangie axle?

goodness only knows what it is - I can only think later 90 but have never been close enoguh to examine one.

would the early 90 shaft which would mate with drum brakes even fit on a disc braked rangie axle?

I guess the only way to tell is to take it apart which I dont really fancy doing to be honest!

Just whip a rear half shaft out and have a look - 6 bolts, IIRC?

right

what shape is the end of the drive flange?

Flat held in with 17mm bolts is 24 spline
domed held in with 14mm bolts is 10 spline rangie
pointy with a rubber cap like the fronts is a 10 spline defender drum brake shaft

if its not any of the above, take a picture n post up

10 spline shafts in genral are all aprox the same strength

the 24's are slightly stronger but its all swings n roundabouts

Is there no end to your expertise Mike?

It's pointy with a rubber cap the same as the fronts with I think 17mm bolt heads... So that would suggest defender drum brake 10 spline shafts so it's worth me keeping the other rear axle for spares then.

What are the brake pads going to be
