I took this off a bracket attached to the steering damper mount yesterday. Anyone know what it is? Very heavy. My guess it's to damp out some sort of resonance.
-
Think its what's called a doughnut - not sure of the official name !
-
As far as im aware its to cancell out vibration from the diff (harmonic balancer?) Anyhow i removed mine yonks ago and not noticed any difference,
-
Yep, it's a harmonic damper, to soak up vibration from the axle/drive train.
It has to be removed when fitting the wrap-around type front diff guard, I've not heard of any complaints of vibration after having removed it.
-
Also known as mass damper. You're right, it's to change resonance. The piece of wire is so if it drops off, it doesn't smash through somebody's windscreen.
The doughnut generally refers to the rubber ring in some Disco prop shafts, or at least it does when I've heard it mentioned.

I stand corrected - has been a long day #-o #-o

its excess baggage and can be thrown in the bin

I might be wrong, it has been known :D
Mine fitted fine with my QT guard, so I've left it on. IIRC it was a bit fiddly to screw it all together without dropping it on my head, but we got there in the end.

I re-fitted mine with the wraparound gaurd too.... i might bin it if it isn't required!!
-
As soon as you lift the car it's pointless as the harmonic it's there to damp changes. They were intorduced with teh EFi on RRC, possibly becasue the porpshafts got bigger at the same time. If your car is no worse without it, leave it at home.

Ah good old Landrover.... always bits left over when you change something..........
Imagine my bits bin!!
-
Aha
I feel educated........... I always assumed it was some sort of roller to help the steering bits roll over lumps........... which sounds kinda thick now I've typed it, but hey.

Well I've been driving around for a couple of days now without it and to be honest I think there is a tiny bit more vibration but added to all the other vibrations it's not enough to make a special effort to refit it.
