Hi All.
I have a 1993 200Tdi disco. I have noticed that the headlights arnt very good. I was wondering if anyone had done anything to improve them. I have spots fitted so the main beam is ok. But the low beam is terrible. I was thinking of modding it to take some round defender style ones.
I dont want to spend £100's of pounds fitting a Td5 front end or anything like that.
I tried some ice blue bulbs, but they made it worse.
Cheers Wayne. :D

How old are the headlights?
I had a small RTA last month and had to replace the lights.
Just putting new standard ones in make such a differance, and there cheap.
-
I have a 200 & the lights are like candles but my duagter has just boght one & the lights are much much better so might just buy some replacement ones,
-
Ill give that a try. You guys obviously know what i mean then. :)

my mothers 200 disco headlights are crap too, you're not the only one

If you take a look on devon's website they sell a replacement "plug in" wiring loom which will allow you to put halogen / uprated lamps in the headlights, alternatively you can get a brother who's very nice and owes you a christmas present to do the same thing for you.
The standard disco wiring loom is frankly made from spagetti and just by putting better cable in there you'll notice a difference, I did :)
(then I replaced the lamps, and I really noticed a difference)

is the link for the devon kit, I'm sure other people do similar, or failing that you could probably manage to make something up yourself ...
Oh, and take the bowls out and pour some bicarbinated soda and water into the back, swill them out and then let them dry (washing to get the goop off) ... it really helps when they don't have an internal tide mark.
-
Cheers Datalas. They shouldnt have a tide mark as it has never been off-road. :)
But i wil try the changing the wiring trick. What bulbs did you use in the end?
-
Good quality bulbs will do.
Have a look here ref wiring http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=37466

I lost a headlight on the way back from work so ended up going for a middle of the range (price range that is) pair from hellfrauds, the ones which were around £15 and rated for road use (a lot of them are for 'off road' use only)
but, to be honest I noticed quite a difference with the standard lamps once I'd upgraded the wiring.
-
I bought some of theose Crystal lamps for the Rangie(s) and fitted the Halfrauds ultra bright lamps (gold packaging).
I noticed a huge black hole in the middle of thepattern so I refitted the standard bulbs that came with the lamps and they are much better.
TBH most bulbs on sale nowadays are Xenon anyway, Iodine is no longer used IFAIK.

I have heard people say they got a huge improvement br running a relay betwen the battery and the existing lamps and then using the existing headlamp wiring to trigger the relay. It was one of those things I kept meaning to try as mine arent great either. I think spagetti wiring is right, they were crap when they laeft the factory. Another land rover "feature"!?
