Title: Running a car/4x4 on tap water
Post by: lenrover on February 14, 2007, 22:29:37
was looking at some plans that a freind of mine has bought to make a device to extract the hydrogen from tap water using electrolisis and run a car on it?

Any one else seen these? Apparently the guys from austrailia who has converted about 30 vehicles so far and the first vehicle he converted and did most of his research on was fitted with a rover V8

If I recall correctly, the energy required to do the conversion of the liquids etc. is so great that it is not worth it.

well apparently its all possible with a standard 12v system using the standard altenator  the figures quoted in the plans are very low (about 10amps IIRC) apparently its all about getting the chamber the exact right size for the reaction to happen

He should offer the idea to the big fuel companies... they'd pay a fortune to hide that type of system if it really works!!!

The technology apparently exists to a point, and has been proven to work.

Would governments let this technology out? if it did work?

I know it sounds paranoid, but economically it makes sense, economies would crash if this was allowed to be a fuel option.

according to all the conspiracy theorists, this was thought of years ago, but was hushed up, patents bought out etc. Be interesting to see though. Running something on hydrogen. Whats the word that springs to mind? Oh thats it!

   HINDENBURG!

years ago they didnt even know what to do with all the "waste" product that we all now know as lpg........... look what happened to the price of that, eh?!

Mythbusters tried a number of variants of this and none of them were even plausible due to the high energy input required to start the process.

Sorry to burst the bubble

The Hindenburg's destruction was caused by the materials and paint that was used on the outer face of the airship.  Guess what the materials were?  The materials used in solid rocket fuel.

Splitting hydrogen and oxegen apart takes a certain amount of energy.  The amount of energy released from the oxidation of hydrogen is roughly the same amount as it takes to create the hydrogen in the first place.  It's called a reversible chemical reaction.  Think of it like a battery.

Now I have heard through contacts that if you introduce Hydrogen into the airstream on a diesel you can burn the fuel more efficiently as Hydrogen is a catalyst.  It's what's going on with an LPG conversion on the old oil burner.  Can release 20% extra energy in the right circumstances but the technology is still fragile.  The vehicle would created the hydrogen as it went along.

you can split off hydrogen and oxygen with a 9v battery just add a little salt to the water, it just comes down to the equipment needed in a car to run it by adding just tap water into a fuel tank would take most of the space up. (is a few around already but slow)
making it in garage then pumping it in is easy, just don't go down well with health and saftey

Here's an interesting website: http://www.keelynet.com/energy/waterfuel.htm

Problem is that, as mentioned, it takes such a large amount of energy to electrolyse the water that the engine would hardly have any left to move!

So, if you want to change the world, try and figure out how to create fast and stable electrolysis on a few volts. (Preferably without using acid and expensive metals such as platinum!)

Great idea. No doubt some brainiac will figure it out one day. Wish it were me.

Simon.

Just put some more sodding unleaded in and go for a drive, Mythbusters couldnt make enough hydrogen to even start the car, let alone run it, the size of the processing plant would be huge, the electricity required would be immense, you'd have more success siphoning gass off rotting pig poop and running your car on that.

Mythbusters ran a piece on this recently and whilst they could extract hydrogen in this way it was such a small quantity that it was completely pointless.

If it was that easy we'd all be doing it!

The EBAY kits that claim to make this work are a scam. As posted above, its been tried on Mythbusters and in other places, New Scientist ran an article on it a while back and came to the same conclusion.

It is possible using advanced fuel cells but plain electrolysis wont cut it. Yes you can produce hydrogen this way but to get it out at the speed an engine would need it nulls out any benefit. Net energy gain is 0

What was intresting is they ran an article on a system where by you can change the electrolyte in a battery, so you'd drain off the discharged stuff and top up with charged stuff.

if i cut a hole in the snorkel top and stick a bottle of camping gas in it constantly spraying, will it make my tdi go fast?        :P

Its a bit like the cold fusion reactor in the late 80's... Itwas going to solve everything, but sadly it disappeared... some say the oil companies got a hold of it.

If you want to save the planet work out WHY Julie has to go work in Leeds when she will be sat in front of a computer EXACTLY like this one, but maybe not as fast.

If the Gov't did something about all the people who are forced to commute for no real reason except for bums on seats there would be more road left for us to drive around on for no reason whatsoever :)

Then we just need to get all the trucks back on the railways and the job is done :D
