Hi,
this is probably a Numpty question but will 7.50 tyres fit on standard disc/rrc rims, as I'm skint and need some tyres, I have 5 wrangler M+s 7.50 in VGC and could get them changed over for vertually nothing, how would this affect the handling of my discovery, I take it i need bigger bump stops, I'd grate ful of any input.

Yes they will fit no problem, should not affect the vehicle at all.
However, the minimum 2" lift, extended brake lines, rear arch trimming, possible front bumper trimming and adjusting the lock stops to get them to fit on the car may have an effect.
-
Thanks for that, according to the Tyre fitting guide i'd have to adjust the steering stops and bump stops, so I shall have to save up and buy a couple of new Tyres.

You don't need a lift kit or extended bump stops to fit 7.50 tyres, just do like Camel did through out the 90's, which was a simple trim to the rear wheel arch. Just do a search for 'Camel cut' for full details.
-
That is true, however the tyre size used on Camel Trophy Discoverys was 7.00x16 not 7.50x16.
-
So If I did a 1" suspension lift with spacers ( would I need to get extended brake hoses) the bumpstops and a camel cut would the 7.50x 16 fit?
-
I know a lad ran 7.50's without a lift on a 200tdi disco for ages. he did camel the rear arches but a lift wasn't required.
-
It probably depends on the actual vehicle, I'm just going on what is 'typically' needed, as Jim says he knows of someone who ran with them without any suspension mods.
Some vehicles will cope fine with a 2" lift, others will really not be very nice to drive afterwards at all.
Some may be ok with 7.50's, others will rip the arches out when you start articulating.
You may get away with it with a 1" lift, brake lines should be ok - you may just have to limit how far you go if you're out playing.
-
Yep, we told him they would never fit but we were wrong lol. They fitted fine and it was on fairly worn suspension until recently......
-
In my personal experience having run 235/85's on my Disco (same diameter but slightly wider) you can run these tyres without suspension mods on standard Disco steel wheels but take it off road and camel cut or not they will catch the arches without a lift. 750's being slightly narrower maybe OK but my 235's were way off so I doubt it.

Food for thought, when money allows I would like to get a 2" lift but can't afford it at the minute, and mostly go off road to fix fences or move things, if i get HD springs, the 1" spacers that should give me a bit of a lift and I get extended bump stops, would I need to have castor correction ( cause that seems to be epensive)and extended brake pipes, surely the above would give only 1 1/2" of lift. tHe cost of Hd springs spacers and bumpstop is about £125 so it is still marginallly cheaper than apair of Tyres and should allow me to use the 750's, at the end of the day I get better clearance under the axles and a little more articulation. is that about right, also easier to sell the Idea to SWMBO as its cheaper than buying 2 new tyres.

Why do you want to do all that? even with a lift the rear arches will probably still need some trimming. or is it a casue that perswading SWMBO the body work needs cutting a little difficut.
Unless you fit longer shock absorbers you will not increase axle articuation and fitting stiffer springs wil increase the effect of weight shift as the axle articuates which means that the unloaded wheel will have less traction per degree of articulation.
Summerised
If you want increase articulation fit longer shocks
If you want increased traction fit softer (lower spring rate) springs
However too softer spring causes instability on slopes and excessive body roll

I wouldn't have thought they would be a problem . . . . 7.50 are only an inch larger on the radius in real terms, so no lift or messing should be required . . . . a bit narrow for my taste mind. . . . . but hey, each to there own.
A set of 'heavier' duty springs should sort out any clearance thats needed . . . without the expense of a full blown lift . . . .
And they're all into selling lift kits these days . . . . even if they're not really required . . . .

Thanks Tyke
thats what i had hoped I shall give it ago and see what happens,
Yes in future I may desire a lift but at the moment 7.50's will give me better under axle clearence and cost me little as I already have them :o
I would like to say thanks to every one who has commented, but I think I shall try HD springs and a Camel Cut with extended bumpstops :D :D
At the end of the Day its cheap as I have the tyres if it works ok I can always get some 235\85 r16's when money allows, the transition from road to mud has to be slow so as to avoid scaring SWMBO and the bank manger, thanks again.
