Title: Alternator Help/Advice needed

Sorry if you read this in other thread, but I didn't see that anyone noticed it...and the item on ebay is ticking down 28 mins left.
I have recently replaced my Battery, having been caught out by the last cold snap, and knowledgeably knowing that it was inferior for the previous two years.

Since changing the battery, I have noticed that my rev counter has been 'bouncing' erratically and at times none existent, could this be the alternator?

If yes, and I need to replace it, what should I be looking at in terms of manufacture output & average price?

I bought a new one off e bay a few weeks ago for £30 plus £12 postage.
I will try and find out the persons name becaus i think he had a few.

I never got to bid on the one on ebay today, I was really, really hoping that someone on here would have given me some advice before the auction ended.

if your rev counter has been erratic check the wire connection to the back of the alternator thats where it gets the reading from if the wires loose or a bad connection that may be your problem

Hi mate had the same probelm with my 300tdi ES 1994  :( it turned out it was the single connector on the back of the alternater was lose and a lttle corroded so i cut it off and replaced it hope this helps as its a little bit cheaper than replacing the unit  :)

Yes if it's charging I'd check the wiring first too.  Mine does it occasionaly , I just ignore it :roll:

Confused!!!, I have tested the alternator, and it is still giving a charge, however, under closer inspection, I dropped the belt off and twirled the shaft, And discovered that the alternator has sheared a bearing.
As I now have the alternator off, I will replace it, but I am confused as to why it is still giving a charge, but not enough to charge my battery.

It's quite possible that it's dropped one or 2 phases, that's why when you test an alternator you need to test it under load rather than just 'idling'

Alternators are rated at something like 13 volts under load, so when you see the figures of say 65 amps, that't the most it can deliver and still maintain the voltage, any more current and the voltage suffers (and the alternator gets very hot).

So you might get a reading of 14.3 at idle, until you switch on your lights.

If the alternator canhold 14 volts or thereabouts with the headlights, screen blower, heated screen etc switched on then it's ok.

Thank you RRB for clearing that up, now onto the next issue, Water leaking from cylinder block, a 40p gasket in return for 5 Hours + work to get it off, then get it on.  :(

Simple answer, a bottle of bodge-in-a-can.  My mate sells 2 really good ones for cracks, not sure if it would be as good on a failing gasket.
