Title: Mixing Tyre Brands

Afternoon chaps

I'm new to 4x4 ownership and off-roading. I have a SWB landcruiser which i'm using for commuting and playing in the mud

It has Kingpin 31/10.50 R15 tyres on the back . Want to get some similar ones for the front as the front tyres seem to be standard ATV tyres .

Would it matter if I mixed brands and for example put Greenway Macho 31/10.50 R15's on the front and left the Kingpins on the back ??

Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated

It is best to have 4 similar tread tyres. The main thing is the outer diameter as if different can cause diff wind up when using 4wd. The front rotating faster than the rear or other way round

Cheers Steve makes sense, someone was explaining diff wind up to me the  other day .

This sounds stupid and prooves how much I don't know yet but how do you tell the tyre width ??? :?

Am i wrong to assume that 2 different tyre makes with the same sizing ( ie 31.10.50 R15 ) would have the same width

Probably made no sense there lol but as I said new 4x4,s

correct sir-so long as they are the same size ie:-31/10.50x15 and the same tread pattern ie:-road/at/mt  you should be ok.

31.10.50 R15

The 31 is the tyre overall diameter in inchs
The 10.50 is the tyre width in inchs
The R means the tyre is radial constution
The 15 is the diameter of the wheel.

These dimensions are nominal figures, for instace a BFG MT 31.10.50 R15

The actual tyre measures 30.8 dimater but 31 is the standard size it is sold as. In AT pattern the tyre diameter is reduced to 30.7 inches.

Remold tyres generall come a bit bigger than a new tyre due to the extra rubber added.


To put it into prespective though the differeance is about 1% at most so windup is not going to be noticeable on soft ground and on the road your going to be running in 2wd or centre diff unlocked (not sure on TLC 4wd system) anyway so its not going to be a problem on high grip surfaces.



One of the most important things is tyre carcus construction, a mix of radial and cross ply tyres on a vehicle is not safe. They should all be of the same type.
