hi, my rear whels are locking up with a severe grind when i drive forwards or backwards its both wheels anddoesnt make a difference if its in high or low or neutral any ideas????????????
disco 200 tdi btw
-
Handbrake could be seized on, and all the drive is going to the front??
-
im not sure because if i pull away dead slow and smooth it will go for a bit then lock up with any sudden speed or slow down
-
Jack one wheel up, check for lash in the transmision. Could be stuck in difflock.
Pete.
-
but would it lock up violently with grating grinding screetch noise?
-
drop the oil out of the axle
but
last time this happend to me, wasnt the diff, wasnt the hand break altho everything pointed to it, was the rear output shaft bearing in transfer box had collapsed and welded itself together, would drive 2 ft before locking up, drive backwards abit lock up then just locked up altogether and wouldnt budge, had to drag it off the road with my 90's winch

btw, when i diff goes, it usualy just spits its guts out of the axle casing, so i cant see it being that, handbreak or a bearing somewhere id say

this doesnt lock lock not all time it can go but grinds not go far tho and i dropped the oil and it was a sort of thin brown mess
-
does it clock and nock its bag off ?
chock the wheel
let hand break off and take it out of gear
scraw underneath and turn the rear prop and see if its notchy
the grab where the prop bolts to the diff and check to see if the pinion bearings aint collapsed
and then feed back
thin brown mess says to me its not been changed for a while, and its got abit of muddy crappy water in there

no real knocking just metal against metal sound and severe haulting of truck locking both wheels up
-
could be diff, could be transfer box, but when ive blown diffs they never locked up  just a bang then no drive
try dropping the transfer box oil aswel
dan
-
if was something to do with transfer box would it still do it in neutral on transfer box as that didnt make a difference
-
yes cos both props would be turning so would still be turning the output shafts to the transfer box

-
right ok its all very confusing need to try figure problem out so can resolve it before weekend :?
-

here's what id do
drop oil out of transfer box
if clear...its done no harm changing it
jack back axle up and plonk on axle stands and fettle
or you could just remove the diff to have a look at it
hours work if that

what do i look for in oil out of transfer box? nd how do i drain it cheers for help
-
If the oil is clear oil colour (as new) - very good.
Browny colour - worth changing.
Milky - water has got in and change oil needed.
Black mess - needs changing.
If it feels gritty to the touch I would worry mate. Thats as far as my knowledge goes im afraid.
-
well the problem is my diff :( so new one on 2moro

Got one sat on my back step that didn't get collected by someone :?
