I always like the look of big chunky tyres i.e 33/12.5
But at the moment the rangi has 235/85 fitted with a 50mm lift which make it look high but the tyres aint that wide.
So do get a set of 235/85 muds or
Lift it another 2" with some wheel spacers and fit 33/12.5??? which will look and handle a lot better on and off road.

My 235/85 are 32" anyway so 1 inch taller hardly seems worth it to me, the 235/85 is a very common Landy size so they are cheap. Personally i have no time for wide tyres, i wouldn't want to drive on wet tarmac on foot wide mud tyres............

or you could buy 10 inch rims with the offset already built in.

Tyre choice depends on a lot the terrain you drive on.
On tarmac you will be wasting money on fuel with the 33/12.5 due to their higher rolling restance.
On damp grass the wide tyres have a tendancey to slide sidways, which is all very nice untill you actually end up on a grassy sideslope and regret it. Having said that, i've been left sliding on grass with 7.50 SATs, but then in that circumstance what i really wanted was either a winch or roll cage rather than different tyres.
Also you have the incresed cost of tyres of bigger, less common tyres.
If none of these problems are of any significance to you then sure go for the bigger tyres if you want them.
-
but surely it wouldn't make too much difference in fuel costs as I'm running 235/85 which are about 31''
wouldn't the extra width make a big difference in muddy situations ?
-
go for 35s and invest in an angle grinder!

The wider the tyre the more likely it is to float on the mud rather than cut through it to solid footing.
If you driving on pure bog then possibly... but for most purposes narrower is better.
IMHO of course!

That is a age old argument............ I like narrow as i think wide tyres skate on mud but loads of people don't agree........
-
my opinion is that they will dig through the mud, whereas narrtow tyres will slice through it and if its deep then you will get stuck.
And it looks better with very wide tyres. :)

so what size is where a tyre switches from skating to sinking?? on say a defender 90.

Was lanin' on 265's a while back and was getting major understeer in mud, never happened before on my 235's i couldn't believe the difference and its only 3cm per tyre............

That varries greatly with the precise ground conditions. In the wrong conditions (right foot dependant) i have had 7.50 SATs slide sideways. Though I was getting on better than the 110 running 33/12.5r15, however not being the same tread pattern this is not exactly a fair test.
The fact that a lot of challenge trucks run 35" in either 10.5" or 11.5" wide tyres gives a good indictation of an optimum tyre size for a 90, but there are a lot of variables to balance.

I'd stick with what you have, depending on where you drive big wide tyres are a help or a hindrance.
Also if you go much taller you will need to gear the thing down, have you noticed already how uselss 5th gear is? try towing with it :?
