Title: Can't Get You Out Of My Head
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on November 10, 2004, 23:25:50
On my way home from work tonight I was listening to Radio 2 (as I usually do at all hours)

'Monkey Boy' Mark Lamarr was just finishing & he played a trailer for Mark Radcliffe (who seems to have 'lost it' since his late night Radio 1 slot)
During the trailer, which was asking for songs/poems about towns, a song was playing as well.

I've heard it many times & like it lots, but.... I never get to hear the singers name.
It's called 'Our Town', or 'My Town', a female singer.

And no it's not a version of;
'Dirty Old Town' (Ewan McColl, or even The Pogues)
'My Hometown' (The Boss)

The singer sounds like she could be one of these;
Iris Dement
Kate Rusby
Kate (or Anne) McGarrigal(?)

Nancy Griffiths
Emmy-Lou Harris

The phrasing & accent is not easy to place.

I know Mike Harding plays it a lot on his Wednesday evening folk show

And the winner is........

Iris Dement

Decided to do a bit of searching, I'd got myself convinced since posting that it was Emmy-Lou, but as she guested on a Iris CD I got a link

Nice words & sentiments
 'Our Town' (http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/dement-iris/our-town-11280.html)

I also like the track she recorded with Steve Earle (& The Del McCoury band) for their CD 'The Mountain
 'I'm Still In Love With You' (http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/earle-steve/im-still-in-love-with-you-2195.html)
