Anybody know what this might be a symptom of?
When changing up sometimes just as the clutch pedal comes to the top of its travel I get what I can best describe as a mechanical Brrrrr sound. Just for a second it is. Is it me? have I lost the ability to drive all of a sudden or is something on the way out?
Any body come across this before.......is it clutch or gearbox...?
Your views are much appreciated.

Possibly clutch thrust bearing. Should do it even if you are in neutral and stationary though as well. With the engine ticking over, hang out of the door and press/release the clutch pedal. A dry, rushing noise coming from the engine/gearbox joint is the thrust bearing drying up. This doesn't necessarily mean that something is about to fail - some vehicles have this noise for years.

Sometimes when I first start her up in the morning it rattles like feck till I press the clutch pedal down for the first time then its ok but you can still hear a bit of a rattle.
This might be it then eh...?

Seems likely that the thrust bearing is the problem.

A worn clutch arm will give the same symptoms i believe.

If you decide to replace the thrust bearing, then it's wise to replace the clutch arm at the same time, as they are prone to failure. This is such a common problem that reinforced clutch arms are usually fitted.
This is a thread that covers replacement of the clutch operating fork (clutch arm). This is the same process for changing the thrust bearing.

Leslie, is it possible to change the clutch using the procedure in the thread that you put the link to...?.......I dont know when or if the vehicle has ever had a new clutch fitted, it has done 80,000 miles at present.
If i`m gonna take the G/Box off then surely it would be wise to replace all of the clutch components.
Is the beefed up clutch arm a Landrover mod? if not then who makes them?

This is how I replace clutches. As I work for myself I don't have the strength to lift a gearbox off the ground on my own, so this is the way I do it. The gearbox will move back approx 7-inches, which is enough room to replace the entire clutch and operating arm. The reinforced clutch arm isn't available off the shelf, you buy a new one (about £10), then get someone to weld a plate or washer over the area that pivots, like this:-

well the gearbox is now back in and I replaced the clutch/arm/release and spigot bearings, I also reinforced the clutch arm with a piece of steel welded to the inside of the recessed part of the arm, welded a washer over the area of the pivot point and welded another full piece over the top to the full profile. That should do it.. :wink: ....the noise was coming from....the springs in the clutch friction plate, they were loose and rattling about... :wink: .....the release bearing was dry as well. Looked like the gearbox had not been out before.....the vehicle had done 80,000 miles and there was still a couple of thousand miles of wear left on the friction plate.
