Title: What do I buy?
Post by: HiFonics on November 11, 2004, 17:13:45
The 90 is going in for a service next week and while its in the workshop I was contemplating getting another toy added. The choices I have narrowed it down to are:

1. Fearn Intercooler and Chip
2. 1.6 Transfer Box
3. Webasto Engine Pre Heater
4. Rear ARB Locker plus compressor

I am a little bit worried about the chip/intercooler as although I would love the extra power I am worried about stuff like the exhaust manifold going whizz, pop, bang. Although getting this done might mean I dont need the lower geared transfer box.

The 1.6 transfer box sounds like a very good idea as I am running on 35" tyres and do a lot of road work. As I understand it, it should make my 90 a bit quicker on the motorway or it wont have to work quite as hard to maintain a comfortable cruising speed.

The preheater is also a nice idea, but a pricy one. It would mean on those cold mornings that the truck is defrosted and nice and warm when I jump in. Would be quite handy as I tend to be out early in the morning. Also would reduce cold start damage.

I quite fancy the locker but that is perhaps the least sensible option given that I use the vehicle mainly for road work and am building up a truck specifically for off roading.

Any input as to what the dollars should go on? I can only go for one option.

Cheers,

Ben

Go for the heater....  you'll get more use out of it and appreciate it more than the others :-)

My Red 130 has chip and intercooler, and diesel heater in cab, althrough not pre heater.
The chip and intercooler make 2500kg of vehicle move really nice it will cruise at 70+ all day, so considering an overdrive, but the extra power is great, and will move a 90 with 35" no problem.
The heater in the winter would be great, but how many months would it get used, 3 months, perhaps 4 tops.
So, 3-4 months  of no frosty screen, against 12 months of power and a DAM big smile on your face.
CHIP IT, CHIP IT, CHIP IIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTT.

Or 12 months of a ready warmed diesel, reducing cold start wear, battery load, etc.

Maybe we should start a poll :-)

My only worry with the webasto is my THatcham Cat 1 alarm/Immobiliser. I am wondering if the current draw will set the alarm off.
