My 90 seems to wandering all over the road at the minute. Now, fair enough, I'm running 33" ITSTs but it has gotten a lot worse recently and I'm starting to get worried about turning corners when there's a car coming the other way! It sometimes swerves across the carriageway and then over corrects almost into a ditch! I've just swapped a 200tdi for the old TD lump but it started before the conversion. Problem is that now I can go faster it is more pronounced. The steering box seemed adjusted correctly but the steering damper bushes looked knackered. Also sometimes the wheel will begin to 'dance' after I've hit a small bump, shaking rhythmically from side to side until I either accelerate or decelerate. What's that about?!

How old is the Steering damper?
As you say the bushes look past it, perhaps the damper is as well.
SWMBO's old disco used to shake after hitting a tiny pot-hole, new damper on and it was fine.
If it was dodgy before the engine swap, I dont think the new engine has a lot to do with it.
You'll probably get loads more replies on this but this may be a starting point for you.

Sounds like mine used to be, much betetr now, check the swivel pins for wear/movement and remove sonme shims if loose.
What state are the rest of the bushes, hockey sticks etc?
I replaced all the bushes on the suspension did the swivels but not touched the damper yet and mine does it a little but controlable now, used to be as you said, dangerous to go round corners etc.
Have some HD springs to put on and see if that helps next, but am running 205 machos so a bit like being on stilts anyway

Panard rod bush's and play in the uj's on the steering arm from the colum to the box.

Sounds like the steering damper to me as Dennis the Diesel said
Unbolt one end and push & pull it, if it pushes/pulls steady & even it's ok
If it suddenly shoots in or out it's nackered
hope that makes sense
