The shop manual I have states that I need to remove the bumper in order to be able to remove the fender. I this in fact true? I want to get in there to have a look at I might go about routing the ductwork for a homemade snorkel.

What year is your car again? some modles have a hole punched in the inner wing ahead of the air cleaner behind the headlight. Some models have the air cleaner pickup through that hole, into the void between the wings and above the wheelarch liner.
I think the wing is secured to a bracket behind the end of the bumper though, to try and answer your question.

it's a '95 Tdi. And how difficult is it to pop the fender aux. light off?
-
Why not just remove the plastic wheel arch from inside the fender and access it that way, saves taking the thing off.
It's held on with plastic clips that have pin in the middle, just punch the pin through and the clip will come loose. IIRC there is a rivited bracket that holds the inner arch to the fender, just at the top of the arch so careful here.

That sounds pretty good! Two new questions then: 1. What does IIRC mean? and 2. Will the plastic pins be reusable after being pushed out of the clips?
Side note: My wife managed to sheer my roof rack off this morning on a the rain cover to a small bicycle parking area at our local bank. The roof rack has seen better days, but the Disco now has even more "character".

Not sure about theay year, but it comes off the earlier ones without taking the bumper off.
Should look like this with a snorkel fitted.

Looks very good mate. :)
