Title: High beam problem!?!
Post by: thepsychoman on March 04, 2007, 17:47:57
Hi all,

Got a problem on Mrs Psychoman's V8 MkI Disco - main beams work fine, but high beams have stopped working (switch to high beam and nothing changes - stays on main dipped beam).

"Flash" works fine - so obviously not a problem with the bulbs themselves.

So - thoughts? Haven't had much experience about Disco 'lectrics (much happier with old Landies and Rangies!) - but would a relay cause this or is it more likely to be a problem with the stalk switches? Is this a known fault? Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks all.

I had same problem and found the earth wire was not strong enough so i atached a extra earth wire from each bulb connector to the battery.

Weird - not thought of that one - though not sure that explains why the high beam flashers still work?!? Or am I being a bit dim?

Try a test earth wire, because main beam uses more juice. As soon as i connected the extra earth i had no further probs.

It will be your high beam switch the discos dont use relays for the lights so they have a habbit of melting the contacts on the stork switch. So it will be new storl time and a bit of a rewire to put a relay in for the high beam

Bogger - I didn't know that!

I'll try the earth idea first as that looks like an easy/cheap option! If I get no joy there, then I'll look at the switch gear itself. When you mention this melts is that in the switch or in the wiring somewhere?

Out of interest - we are hearing a randomly clicking relay under the dash somewhere on the drivers side - any idea what that would be? Kinda hoping it was the lights!!!

We had the same problem and it turned out to be a bad earth. Just took a new earth from each side and fixed it onto the rad brackets. Everything ok now.

Thanks for that - fingers crossed. Once that's fixed our next job is painting it like Grave Diggger! Don't ask....

Ah - okay - thats handy to know - dont fancy stealership prices for a new one - probably worth more than the Disco!?!

The clicking could be a relay for auxiliary lights.  Also check the high beam fuse as the courtesy flash might be an ignition fuse (could be wrong but worth a look).
