Title: Number plate location
Post by: Dennis the diesel on March 06, 2007, 21:09:55
Hi Folks

A young friend of mine got a 'tug' by the Police this afternoon - it seems they didn't like his number plate location - in the cab, sat on the dash top.
He was asked to relocate it onto the winch bumper so that it faced forwards and was at 90degree's to the road surface - if he didn't , 3 points and £60, thank you.
The police claimed that this is a new law which they seem to be enforcing with a certain degree of vigour: they also claim that 'the speed camera's cant see them'.

Having seen some of the pix on here, I think a fair number of us might be 'spoken to' about this. my T/R has its front plate on the bar under the windscreen, the off-roader's is mounted on the top of the cage, tucked in out of the way and SWMBO's other one has it hanging from the roof rack.

I always believed that, as long as the plate was mounted vertically and could be clearly read, there shouldn't be a problem - Mr.M.o.T. is happy with them in their current location.
Can anyone verify this for me please? if I have to move 3x number plates,I will, but only if I need to
Thanks,  Chris

the obvious standard is in the middle of the bumper type thing, but surely if it can be read by traffic its ok? i know they dont like them in the window as we've had it with the zukis thanks to big puddles..

on your friends can they not locate on roof rack/ side of winch bumper so as not to lose the bliter when doing swimming exersises?

i can see a problem with it mounted inside the cab as its not clearly visible but anywhere outside the vehicle properly displayed facing the front should not be a problem, i cant see anything on the legal sites saying about positioning just it has to be forward (or rear) facing and clearly legible

AFAIK unless you have a motorbike the numberplate needs to be mounted in clear view, unobscured and vertical.

I'm not convinced sticking it in the window qualifies as those :(

I can't really see there being a height issue, I have seen a lot of trucks with tail lifts that have them mounted over the rear door 13 feet up, I can see the point with it behind the screen though, a speed camera flash/normal camera will most probably reflect back off the screen

i've never been told i cant do that on the several occasions i've been pulled (the joys of being a teenager driving a 4x4!)

I thought that as well until I got the pic to show that the numberplate can still be seen  :(  cost me £30 to find out I think or was it £60
