Hello,
the battery light is on, on my 200tdi but only when the ignition is off does any one have a clue what it could be?the battery isn't flat and the battery light goes off when the engine is running - Keith
-
no, sorry.
-
would suspect the diode pack in the alternator is on its way out
-
He's right it's the diodes, one has gone and it's letting battery power back through the field coils, flattening your battery. New parts is the answer
-
is that a New alternator or is it possible to replace the diode pack?
-
If you can get the parts you can DIY, I had mine replaced by a local company. That said I killed it agin and had it fully reconn'd but no, you shouldn't need a new one if bits can be found.
-
There cheap enough to replace the whole Alternator
My diodes went replaced then went again so new alternator was purchased

Well due to the fact that the wifes 306 is currently dead, I had to go for the quick fix and bought a new alternator, Though I will probabley try fixing the old one as a spare is always useful, prior to this happening the rev counter used to stop working ocassionally isn't also a sign of a faulty alternator?
-
Yes, IIRC the rev counter works on one phase of the alternator, so it's been living on borrowed time.

SWMBO just called me at work, the battery light is now coming on when the engine is running, so i take it that means the battery is stuffed or the new alternator isn't doing its job, I shall have to check when I get I should be getting about 14.4v from the alternator shouldn't I :(

:D the alternator belt had snapped its amazing how swmbo couldn't tell me if the rev counter was working, which it wasn't so i poppped the bonnet and discovered the belt was in bits. Never mind i changed for a new one :D the only question left now is why do things only go wrong when there is a snow storm.
