Little question - I am getting Piglet back on the road, however he has no Tax and no MOT as he is SORNED. Is it legal for me to drive him to the garage to get an MOT. Secondly will it be legal for me to drive him home and then get a tax disc, or shall I get the garage to try and sort it for me?

I think you're fine to drive to the MOT station, provided you've booked it in with them prior to leaving home.
If stopped on the way then you should be fine.
Same applies when going home again.
As for getting it taxed again, not sure. You could try stopping off on the way back and getting it but remember to take the SORN and registration documents with you, as well as the insurance. :wink:
Best check up on the DVLA website and see what's required and also, maybe, call the local police station and ask about driving to the MOT station just to make sure. :wink:
I'll have to go through this if I ever get the engine back into the Rangie so lets us know how you get on. :D

We asked this for my motor last year and as I understand it from our MOT tester as long as you are booked in for an MOT you can drive it a "reasonable" distance to the MOT station. As Budgie says if you take the V5 and insurance certificate with you, you can always tax it on the way home as long as it passes :wink:

Agree with the above, but dont stop to tax it on the way from the mot, you are still legally on sorn, play safe and straight there and back, then nip and tax it by some other means
Good luck with the mot :wink:

yes it is legal. you just need insurance to drive to a prebooked mot.
official government wordses (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/UntaxedVehicle/DG_4022058)
When can an untaxed vehicle be used on a public road?
An untaxed vehicle cannot be used or kept on a public road.
There is one exception:
You can drive an untaxed vehicle on a public road to and from a pre-arranged:
* MOT testing station
* VIC testing station
* an approved vehicle weight testing station which covers design weight certificate or plated revenue weight
* reduced pollution test
* provided that adequate insurance cover for your use of that vehicle is in place

or tax it on line when you return ;)

you cant tax it straight away as the mot takes a while to get through the system. I tried!
Had to do mine next day!. went out in it straight after taxing it online (yes i know this is perhaps slightly naughty but i dont care as ive paid for it so im gonna use it!), and got pulled over as it was still showing up as having no tax on the system in the bobbies car!
He was quite happy with me driving with no disc and with my 'just done it online officer' excuse. I'm going to print out the reciept it gives you next time just to keep as proof.

Hi Mate, as a bobby I would have no issues with you taking it for an MOT as long as it is booked in and you are going there directly. You also need to have the vehicle insured. Its the same with taking it home, anyone that reports you for no tax on your way home from an MOT needs a few more crimes to work on. As lons as you are above bored you'll be fine.
These are only my opinions.... :wink:

You can't get an MOT without pre-booking now, so the computer knows you are on your way to the test station, and where it's bing tested.
Big brother or what?
Once you have that lovely peice of paper you will need a special form from the post office, you MOT cert all shiny and new, you V5, your insuance, some money (or a spare kidney :? ) and the patience of a saint if my local post office is anyting to go by.
Untill it's been taxe the only journey you can make is to and from the test station, I don't even know if you are allowed to transport it to a place undertaking MOT repairs any more.

I always understood that you can take it for work for the MOT if it's prebooked.
I been in the post office about bringing my Dads TD5 off SORN, as the 1st April is a Sunday they can tax it from Friday 30th.
So if you get the MOT before then which you can't do without insurance to get there then you just go to the post office next Friday.

We have places here you can just drive in without the need to pre-book, I did it on Monday and got a pass.

That is fine if the vehicle is not on a SORN. (Which is what this thread started off as being about.)
If it is on a SORN you have to be able to prove to any police who pull you over that you are using it on the road for one of the few reasons that you are allowed to on a SORN. I expect that they would just phone the garage/test centre to check if you have a vehicle booked in for an MOT, and if so what the vehicle was.
If you are taking a vehicle on a SORN to a "just turn up and get it tested" place without booking it in first and get pulled then you have no proof of using it legally on the road and will end up with the vehicle clamped at the roadside by the DVLA, getting a fine and possibly the vehicle being crushed. Until you have paid the road tax the clamp wouldn't be removed and without a MOT you couldn't pay the tax...
In short: it is best to always pre-book your MOT regardless of whether the vehicle is taxed or on a SORN.

:lol: just tell em its piglet and they should understand....
