hi all , just found this site while surfing and wondered if anyone could shed some light on my problem!!! now i have only just bought my discovery v8 and to say im pleased would be an understatement anyway the fella i bought the motor from never went off road and never used low range or diff lock and here is where my problem starts i can get it in to low range with a bit of fighting and swearing as its so stiff but try as i might she just will not go in to diff lock. i persaonaly think that somthing just needs lubing up does anyone know where?

Yeap, the linkage is external to the gearbox an dmay well be stuck and/or jammed with muck/stones etc.
You can get to it from underneath but the best way to see it is take out the centre console.

Are you sure it has diff lock. The D2s had this as an option towards the end, even though the label behind the gear sticks showed it etc. The electrickery was suposed to be better than the diff lock option.

yes mate its definately got diff lock its a late disco 1 i think, all this gets a little confusing to me as im new to the muddy life all i know is that its an N REG and it dont look like a TD5 my mate said it was a disco 1 300 does that make sense?

Makes perfect sense if it is an N Reg. Then it is indeed a series 1 discovery the 300tdi was the 2nd engine to go into the disco1 the first been the 200tdi. and yes it does have a difflock and yes the linkage probably is gunked up/seized up. Quiet common on disco's that haven't been used offroad.

Seems to be the most common problem, this was my disco the other month, and they had been serviced 6 month earlier
The pic is taken from the drivers seat, as you can see bar sitting through the piece with the shiney nut lever is the slider from diff lock, going down on the pic
Access is not easy from below, but a good soaking with spray oil may free off the linkage, it runs vertically from the box, you will see the sender from below, spray it up try to get a wire brush rounf the joints, and use the lever for a while back and forwards also up and down in hi lo range, dont force it though
