Title: Bad handling Td5
Post by: Jimbo on March 23, 2007, 14:05:51
The Disco's ability to corner like it once did - has got quite poor recently. I thought the tyres needed air, but all 4 corners seem ok, all 4 shocks were changed a few months back, and I've not got any leaks with the rear air suspension (it doesn't sag overnight etc,etc).....so seeing as its done just over 84k miles, I guess it's the bushes, do I:

a) Bite the bullet and buy a complete set and do them all, or

b) Find out which ones are causing my cr4p handling and change them ?

If I go down the complete set route, do I go polybush or stick with original LR bits ?

Can you change these bushes with ordinary tools - or do I need to find a 10 ton press ?

Thanks

I take it it doesn't have ACE?

No, it does have ACE, and SLS - it used to corner really well, but has been getting worse and just recently I've noticed that it seems to 'crash' quite badly when you hit a pothole, or go over speed bumps - as if something is slightly loose underneath. I took a dive under it at the weekend, and nothing is hanging off, broken or noticeably loose, so I'm suspecting that the bushes somewhere are giving up.......but where ?

Any thoughts anyone ?

Suggestions on which bushes to use - polybush etc ? - gratefully received.

I would get the ace checked as ours used to handle great even with 7 in it

I'd recomend poly bushes... have a set on my own disco and Like the difference. Also... some of them are easier to put in.

You'll probably need a press for the hockey stick bushes but a big vice might manage it.

To check the bushes get underneath with a good lamp and a 'kin big pry bar. Try and move the various pieces of metalwork associated with the bushes and if there is movement... there is wear...!

I think there is an issue with ACE.... I seem to remember reading something about it recently. Not sure if it was just a regular maintenance process or whether it was how to deal with a failure. Think it might have been in an LRO or another mag.

Not having a bling motor likeyours... didn't pay too much attention try searching the site for it.

Good luck

Is plugging the truck into a laptop the only way to check if the ACE is working properly ?

had similar problem with my 2000td5, wandering when driving in straight line.
A tyre man said common problem when front tyres get to about 3mm with ACE.
Bit bullet and changed fronts, result Perfect (dont ask me why but it worked)

No, you can always hurl it round a corner and see if you end up in the ditch.

Seriously though, I'd have thought it would have been fairly clear if it wasn't working at all, and I wouldn't have thought it would only be half broken.

I'm running BFG AT's, and they have loads of miles left !

The truck has developed a steering wheel shake at 50mph, so I'm going to get the balancing checked, and will also have a dive underneath to make sure that nothing's coming loose/falling off/is broken etc, etc !
