My local dealer is moving his workshop to a different location, and there's a Disco (Auto,97 Tdi) that's not going with him. He's offered to let me pull whatever I want off it (I've got a 95 Tdi (automatic)) before he junks it, so I'm asking opinions about what I should grab off it.
I've already decided to change the front seats out (nicer than mine) and I'll grab the water pump as well. I've already got a spare set of wheels. Any other ideas about what I ought to get while the gettin's good?

take the whole car if he doesnt want it ,then you have spare panels and running gear(things like diffs and axels are always handy to keep as spare)
-
Well, I forgot to mention that my wife would KILL me if I had a junked Disco towed to the house. Not "kill" as in "be upset with" but more like "suffocate with a pillow".
Seriously though, not an option. More like bits that I'm likely to have to replace at some point, but not the whole vehicle.

Diffs, wheel hubs all round, pro shafts, gear/tranfer box (if you have somewhere to store them), all the electronic/wlwctric arts you can strip out the inside (motors/relays/modules), all the locks and keys, steering box, rad & intercooler, all the lights, decide what you can store and unbolt, then go to town on it, or see if you can get somewhere to store it :D

Grab anything electrical. As these are normally dear to replace. and silly little things like door trim dash trim etc stuff that can be broken easy so you have replacments at hand. If he has the keys go for the ign barrel and steering lock. Bumpers if they will fit so when you bend your off roading you have a spare thast the sort of things i would go for. Just think of the things you have replaced more that once on yours and grab them off the donner one.

if it's a TDi Auto, take the engine and gearbox. They're rare as hen's teeth and worth a bob or seven.
-
just get the car - and hide from SWMBO - lol
-
The engine's fried, that's why it became a parts car.
Also, this IS Japan, where we don't have all that much space to have an extra junked car sitting around in case I MIGHT need something off it. I've got to be a bit choosy.
Pulling out the diffs might be tricky, as I don't think he's going to let me use the lift.

OK so wheels - interior - doors - glass - dash - basically anything you can fit in the back of yours lol...also useful stuff like the ECU's and injector pump etc..

Like the lads say, anything you can. How shot is it, is it worth dropping your engine in it?

You don't need the lift to pull out the diffs, certainly not the back one.
Take off the wheels and pull out the halfshafts, put the wheel back on and put the halfshafts in your boot
then underneath remove the diff using a big trolley jack to catch it as you pry it loose.
Front end either remove the swivles or the hubs and stub axles (you can then nick the Cv joints an half shafts) and do the same.
If it's being scrapped without the hubs then keep at least one spare stub axle each end, muck plays havoc with them in time and they don't take up much space. take a spare hub too if you can.
Basically keep anything that goes round and anything with wires coming out of it.
I'd keep the diffs over the auto box if you have to prioritise, I'd think about some spare panels if time allows especially wings, take all the lights off as you will bust one one day.
the I guess you have to weigh up the space SWMBO won't miss against how many bits you can scrounge in the time that's left to you.
If he's not charging you I'd be tempted to take what you can and get rid of bits later.

That was my first thought, but it turns out that in Japan if the engine serial number doesn't match the original registration papers, you can get into some trouble.
The other problem with taking everything in sight is that if I DON'T use it, I have to PAY to throw it away, and that could make it considerably more than free.
So if it goes round or has wires coming out of it, I'll try to hide it under the storage shed.

Possibly preaching to the converterd but remember to pack anything well in grease/oil etc to prevent tinworm. Nothing worse than getting a freebie and it being a pile of dust when you most need it!
