Title: Disco - Insurance ..... for a 20 year old
Post by: landybear on March 26, 2007, 18:58:30
Hi guys and gals,

Not a technical question i know but just wondering what advice you would give me for insuring a 300Tdi Disco. As from the topic i am 20 years old and have had some stupid quotes thus far!! More than the bloody vehicle!!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Give Sureterm Direct a ring. They've given me reasonable quotes (about £70 per month) on a 300tdi Commercial, with 0 no claims (lost 2 years NCB last year :( ), and an at-fault claim within the last 12 months. With Tesco at the moment but will be switching to Sureterm once I get paid next month.

Oh, and I'm 22.

Thanks for the rapid reply. Yeah not many companies insure anything over 1.8l when your under 21. Bit of a nightmare but their we go!!

I will give them a ring. I see lots of people use Adrian Flux?? The Disco will be my second 'car' so will it knock it down or not??

Planning on putting some mods on to so guess this wont go down with any insurance company?

Oh and one last question.... what about cover whilst offroad?? is their such a thing?

Personally didn't find Adrian Flux very helpful when I tried them, although that wasn't with a Disco. Had seen their praises sung in all the fast car mags, so thought I'd give them a go with my 2.0l Sierra, when I was 19. They wouldn't get anywhere near the quote that Direct Line gave me.

Though it seems it varies from person to person!

Admittedly I also have the benefit of a nice, safe, rural postcode.

Hi mate. I'm with adrian flux at the minute as i fall into the high point young driver catagory. I found that the best way to get the cheapest insurance is to set aside a couple of hours and sit down with a landrover mag and an autotrader. go for the specialist 4x4 companies in the landrover mag and the specialist  young driver companies in the autotrader. then start playing them off against each other! i also tend to knock a few quid off when they ask what other companies have quoted. it pays dividends if you stick with it- i got my bike insurance down from 3500 to 400 quid this way. good luck anyway mate

Hi again very true you do need to play them off against each other i spoke to the 4x4 department of adrain flux when i was quoted it was for a standerd 300 tdi but i ask for a quote for when i had a 2" lift bigger tyres and bumpers and she said there would be no extra change she also said its only normally mods that make it go faster will bump up the price

Im 24 and have been quoted anywhere between £40 to £80 a month for my 300 Tdi with one years no claims. Ended up going with direct line as ive been a named driver on the g'friends car for three years which got me extra discount  :D

If its going to be your second car, make sure you put that your gonna be doing considerably less miles. That should cut it down!

Also you can opt out of the legal protection to save money.

You can get legal protection from people like the RAC for £10 a year which might be cheaper aswell.
If you dont go for any, in the event of an accident they can do it retrospectivley for about £60

Some companies also can do it free if they think that youll make a full recovery after a non fault accident.....which is nice!

Excellent advice people, will have a ring around and see what i can find!!

I have heard that before, that only mods which make it faster bump up the price.

Has anyone had this from any other companies other than flux??

Im a year younger than you, insured through Adrian Flux for £100 a month, all mods I wanted included on a Disco 200Tdi.

Give them a bell, DON'T DO IT ONLINE!

One good tip I picked up on the performance sites is to add an older person ( by older I mean 40-60ish ) as a named driver on your policy .
Even if they never get in the car this can lower your insurance .

What sort of cover do you need? TPFT? Fully Comp? This will obvisouly have a huge bearing affect on how much you pay. Me im with Direct Line, the do a decent service, and the quote wasnt bad either. Im 26, its on a business policy, with full no claims protected and i pay £480 F/C.

It will be fully comp. what about offroad cover? I guess no insurers give a damn if you wrap it round a tree!! as its your fault??

do a search for ecarinsurance i found them fairly cheap and they even do a one month policy that if you renew for eight months you get a years no claims and you dont have to fork out a deposit which on a twelve month policy is normally a killer

Make sure the policy pays out the FULL AGREED VALUE incase of a claim. Elephant and a couiple of others that i cant remember right now will not pay out the full value of your car despite what you think you may be entitled to.

It stipulates this in their policies which was brought to my attention last year.

Personally id go f/c and ask for a limited mileage policy. They never ask the mileage on inception or renewal so whos to know if you have done more miles than your policy?

Off road cover is VERY rare. you can get it but!

what is worth noting is, you are insured when on green lanes, as they are still public highways :D therefore all usual traffic laws apply

Adrian Flux are not my best mates at the moment

They are being a bit of an a**e about RRR's claim and given that they charged £550 for an agreed value 'classic' policy I think they should stand by it.

This is true, I went onto confused.com and did a search. Brought up a company called Highway. I pay £350 P/A which is for fully comp and that includes off road use and greenlaning 8)

Im 24 (nearly 25) and insured disco first off when I was 23. It is my second car as well.

I have gone with Peter Best. Seem to get through first time and helpful. they dont give no claims discount just a premium off for young drivers instead. I pay £300ish 2rd party fire n theft. It was only £6 difference between a max of 6k mileage and unlimeted. guess what I went with!!!!

1 thing I have done that I have easily saved about 2k in total over 7 years insurance is pass pluss but you have to do this within a certain time of passing your test. you maybe able to do this and cost £60. :)

Also peter best doesnt charge anymore for mods as long as it doesnt improve the performance of the vehicle so rock sliders, snorkel, suspension lift etc etc doesnt effect premium. you just have to tell them each time you have done the mods (£15 admin charge each time) (so you tell em in 1 go n say you did them all on 1 weekend  )

hope this helps. mine is up for renewal soon :(
