I know its strictly not a 4x4 question, but can your employer make you sign a contract to say that if you damage a works vehicle, you will have to pay for the damage?

Id guess so if he were able to prove you negligent or careless.......!

shouldnt the company insurance cover that?, mine does.

Only if its your choice to drive it. If you can't do your job without it they can only require you to pay the excess if damage is down to your negligence.

Very interesting. I work as a sparky, so without the van, I can't do my job.
So it looks like a case of either paying the excess, or the cost of the damage, which ever is less?

I shouldnt imagine you should pay, as half of our drivers would be homeless by now

He can make you sign it but whether it's legal and binding is another matter, for a start you signed under duress, because otherwise you wouldn't get the job, and the chances of it standing up in a court of law is pretty slim

Great info guys, many thanks.
