Title: Nasty metallic squealing noise on overrun
Post by: MTyrrell on March 30, 2007, 20:48:59
It seams like ages since anything broke on the Landy. That is until last week!

It has developed a metallic squealing noise during engine breaking and when i put the clutch in to change gear.

I was thinking along the lines of a tires UJ at this point but.....

One of the UJ's on the front prop was replaced last summer by a garage, I replaced the other joint today hoping it was the cause of the noise, but it wasn't.

I did grease the joint that was replaced by the garage and it seamed to take allot of grease before it came out around the bearing cups, although it was a darker grease that came out so i take it there was some in there.

Dose anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the cause of the noise, from what i can tell it's coming from the vicinity of the front prop /diff / transfer box area.

Also the new UJ I put on doesn't come with a grease nipple or a hole drilled for one. Do they come packed with grease to last the life of the joint now?

Haven't checked the rear prop as it sounded as if the noise was coming from the front end.

To be honest it didn't even cross my mind that it could be from the rear

 Ill check tomorrow morning.

quick way to tell if its a uj - scramble underneath and spray loads of wd40 over it. if it shuts up, then its that particular uj :)

dans right though, sounds travel. when we stripped a halfshaft/drive member, it sounded like we'd munched the transfer box at first

my diff went last week, that gave a nasty rumbling, grinding noise only on the overrun, which sounds to me like thats what yours could be

diff pinion bearing   ooo how many of them have i done in   .....cue mike for his dig.....

to check the pinion bearings, just look see if theres any oil leaking from the nose of the diff thats a tell tail sign that the bearings aint so cleaver
also just grab the uj at the diff end and waddle it and look see if theres any play in the pinion, theres usualy just a smidge of play tho

It was a UJ on the back prop
One of the baring cups was completely dry and full of what used to be the needle bearings...... Photos to follow.

 Thanks for the advice guys.
