Title: Bloomin idiots on the motorway tailgating.
Post by: cardiff_gareth on April 02, 2007, 07:54:55
Yesterday, went to Birmingham for the ice skating and whilst on the M5 I think it was had an idiot right up my ar*e
I was in the fast lane, overtaking doing 75mph so couldn't move over til manouve completed, looks in the rear view mirror and I see this golf on my bumper and I mean literally on my bumper so after about 2 mins on it I thought sod this and dabbed the brakes to show some brake lights which resulted in him moving back about 50cm but he still remained there. In the end I was able to move over to the middle lane as I had eventually overtaken the cars in the middle lane. End result, he sped over probably doing over 100mph the way it moved to tailgate the next car and there was an exchange of hand gestures as he passed. Was in the wifes Scenic, if I was in my Disco, grrr

Reminds me of the time when a BMW tailgated me in my series 3, i gave him several hand gestures before pulling in, he then pulled in front of me and slammed his brakes on, funny thing was that my series didnt have ABS fitted like his so i drove straight into the back of his car, his car undrivable, my car, dented bumper! The lorry driver that i was overtaking stopped and said that he would testify in court AGAINST the BMW driver for dangerous driving, we exchanged numbers, i drove off, he waited for the AA, didn't hear a thing from him, cost me £10 for a new bumper!  :?

They will never learn

Best thing to do mate is to let him get on with it. If he punts you up the chuff, it's his fault.
As Yoda may have said:
"Tailgating leads to anger, anger leads to roadrage, roadrage leads to courtcase!"

Besides, sooner or later, some of my ex-work collegues will be shoe-horning him out from under an artic.

Now dont need to say anything to me about tailgating pratts.    .
This is why you should never tailgate they dive into a gap as the trucks are braking for a roundabout

On a similar theme Brother used to work for a recovery company and he got called out to a crash where an artic had rammed a car. Car was parked up at temp traffic light behind another artic. and when rescue services arrived car drivers head was found on back seats.

Tacho showed he was travelling at 40mph when he hit the car.

I used to have a golf gti and was always getting tailgated by prats wanting to race. to solve the problem I wired up the LHD foglamp so I had both fogs working when been tailgated I flicked the fogs on and off. Tail gater would brake and I would accellerate by the time they realised I hadn't braked I'd be 50yds in front. after doing this 4 or 5 times If they still hadn't got the point I'd stamp on the brakes. then do the fog light trick again. They soon gave it up. Then I'd pull over and let them go past.

I just slow down, usually to the spped of the vehicle I am overtaking.  Afetr all like I tell my pupils if the vehicle following you is too close, you need to double your own following distance to avoid having to brake suddenly.

Oh, and if I'm in the LSE I hit the 'up' button on the suspension too

I'll often do that if approaching roadworks where one or more lanes are closed. it stops idiots from driving into the cones or trying to cut in and forcing everyone else to stop. Because hey their life is so much more important than anyone else's. It's amazing how quickly the traffic speeds up.

Also slow right down if in the inside lane approaching a sliproad. and leave huge gap betwen me and car in front so traffic can get onto motorway.

Should be compulsory to give way to traffic merging from the left. It'd end most of the traffic jams.

I will never forget a sign on the back of a large tipper lorry. It read

"smile as you go under"

I will never forget it. Had a tit up my back side today. a peugot van so close to the back of my rover 620 I couldnt see the peugot badge on the bonnet!!! Funny how when I was doing 20mph through the 30 just to [throw it] him off more then when got back into national speed limit I right footed it to 60 and he wasnt to be seen for a few minutes. If you HAVE to tailgate someone at least keep up!!! I always drop my speed to allow a shorter stopping distance and a bigger gap of car infront. I dont want to be pushed into vehicle infront thanks!

must admit a tailgater is one thing but to have a tailgater read a map across his steering wheel is nothing short of sphincter twitching!

luckily i have an auto and kickdown is quite handy just enough to either clear said potential rear ender or to pass traffic and pull in and give the nutjob a big shake of the head (they in turn are oblivious!)

This is one thing I do like in South Africa; around slip roads off and on there is a broken double white line between the first and second lanes so you are not allowed to jump across at teh last moment and you have to get onto the motorway before you can go into the second lane.
Best bit of it is that it only take a bit of paint!

I admit it gets ignored a lot but if it's there and you cause an accident by ignoring it then at least there is no question of blame.

I just force them back to the limit, or match speed with another vehicle on my inside. Then when the moment allows show them just what they *thought* they were tailgating.

Amazing how many of them either never catch up, or when they finally do (and I do mean finally...) and I am tootling at the limit again they smile as if they've won something?! Sad little people.

I went to an accident last year where a car was tailgating a lorry and an lorry was tailgating the car.

The car rammed the back of the first lorry and then the other truck drove over the car! The entire family was killed in the ensuing fire.

It was not a nice sight at all, perhaps people who do this should see the photos of what can happen.

I had one behind me in a JCB 3CX, he got in front of me in the traffic and I dropped the front bucket down in front of my radiator. Still remember the look on his face when he looked in the mirror.

I had on elike that a while back, at night I think i am the only person who obeys one of the local 30mph speed limits, I had some white van driving ass**** behind me, trying to read the chassis number, you know how they do, when we got to the 60 limit I left him in my dust, so you thinkhe'd realise I've got the quicker car and i'm doing 30 BECAUSE IT'S THE LAW but no, when I get to the next pseed limit he flies past me on the wronmg side of an island and cuts in fron tof me, like it's me being the a**e.

I do have one trick up my sleeve though, when a driving instuctor rings their head office and starts tearing a strip off their drivers they have to take notice

A few years ago i tried to report someone to the police for tailgating, no such offence and nothing else they can do unless an accident happens.

Some time in the last fortnight i heard something about a new device that should be fitted to cars to help prevent driving into the car in front.

Forget paying for the device just leave a bigger gap. not rocket science.
