Has anyone changed the CV on a 93 Disco 1 and how easy is it to do?
Is there a way to check the number of splines before removing?
What oil goes in the swivel housing?
I would appreciate any help as mine is about to give up.
Cheers Taz

Taz,
I had to change one of minelast year. I had heard that it was possible to keep the hub in one pice and access the CV... but as my swivels were leaking as well I did it the Land Rover way... everything off.
Trouble was both top and bottom swivel bearings had gone... and by gone... I mean spread themselves around all the open space available! Checked the opposite side and it was the same. :?
As a result I decided I might as well do the whole lot... CV, swivel bearings, swivel seal, and wheel bearings. Took me about three days in the end... but that was with beastie on axle stands and me working sat on my jacksie. bit akward. If you have access to a ramp it'll make the job a WHOLE lot easier.
As for identifying the number of splines... I'm not sure... the ravages of time seem to be playing havoc with my memory of it... either that or after three days sat on my @rse hunched like that bloke from Notre Dam... my mind has erased it!
Hope this all helps and good luck! :D

Remove the calliper to a safe distance
remove the hib and disk in one piece
remove the stub axle
remove the CV joint and halfshaft through the resultant hole.
You should be able to order a CV joint from your chassis number.

i have the same problem on mine - but i am cheating - im throwing another axle under it...swivels are knackered and cv has gone..so another axle is the easier option..
MOST Disco's are 24 spline - -but i am swapping for a 10 spline one (cheaper and more plentiful)

It might save a bit of lifting and swearing if you change the swivles and hi=bs as a complete unit but leave the axle alone, of course you will have to swap the diff Bezza in you case.

Stripped hub down this morning.
Came apart without too much trouble
The CV joint looked and felt fine but found the stub axle bearing totally disintergrated
Ordered new CV and bearing . Hoping to get them in first thing in morning.
Got a set of new brake pads whilst it was off.
I found the CV housing dry of oil except for a bit of sludge. Got some nice new oil to put in.
Going to check other side to be safe.
Next job - Head Gasket - sounds likme a steam train at moment.
Will keep you updated

New bits now fitted
Replaced the brake pipes (copper) as they where rotted and the pads
After a quick bleed of the brakes. Good as New
Even had time to fit 2 more spots into front grill - Piccies to follow.
Just the Head gasket to do - Think I will leave that one to the experts.
Thanks all for your help. Taz 8)

to be honest if you ar patient & resonably compitent with the tools a headgasket isnt to hard,TBH the thing that takes the longest when i do them is setting the tappets back up,
5 hours is good going
4 hours is working flat out & never managed to beat that time

One day I'll suck up the courage to have a go at one.
