Title: Core plugs
Post by: bezzabsa on April 03, 2007, 18:29:43
OK so where are they on a 300 Tdi? My disco keeps dropping water and appears to be passenger side below the manifold - could it be core plugs?
Managed to rule out knackered heater - and dont think its the head gasket (too much water too quickly) also it only seems to drop it when its cooling down?????????????????????

No, you just stick it in the header tank and let it get on with it.

Bez

It still could be the headgasket, the system 'may' be pressurizing and its finding the next weak point in the system

Could be the P gasket - the one between the block and the water pump. An uprated metal gasket was produced due to the problems experienced with this. Sounds like it's in the right area too.

seems to be the rear of the engine not the front...collects at th 'bulkhead' point - but no water inside and heater disconnected.

If the 'P' gasket was the problem, the leak would be at the front of the engine - close to the dipstick.
Thread here showing how to replace the gasket.

I can assure you there is a core plug at the rear of the engine!

A couple of weeks ago I noted on here that I thought my heater matrix had gone. My symptoms were that coolant was dropping from behind the soundproofing on the bulkhead on to the exhaust and gearbox. After doing some research about the task at hand I decided to bite the bullet and use a local mechanic (the same one who fixed my head-gasket!) he was sure he could do it without removing the dash - he was wrong!

He removed the dash and the heater matrix and found the heater full of anti-free so he replaced a very corroded heater matrix. He put it all back together and the leak still continued he then stripped the dash out again as the next candidate is the aluminium manifold that sandwiches the bulkhead and allows the coolant to pass into the heater. He eliminates that and discovers its the core plug at the rear of the engine that sits tight against the sound-proofing.

In the end to save removing the engine and running up a huge bill he cut a hole in the bulkhead - changed the core plug and welded a patch back into the bulkhead, refitted the dash (fixed the non-cancelling indicators whilst there) and it's now sorted.

I hope yours isn't the core plug BTW!

Regards

James
