The red heap of scrap on the left needs a new engine   Once again the red shed blew all its oil out yesterday on the M62 on the way to Langdale Quest. Piston rings are the culprit but its probably gonna be cheaper to fit a decent 2nd hand unit. If anyone knows of a good 2.25D, 2.5D, Montego Diesel Turbo or a 3.5V8 from an SD1 in the new year let me know. (now might be the time to 'bung' in the V8 that SWMBO agreed too ages ago  )
Good news is I can still go to fairly local sites and green lanes as long as it doesnt involve motorway (once the rear diff and halfshafts are changed  ). Good job that SWMBO and next doors Defender owner talked me out of selling it on Ebay and buying a BMX #-o

Go on, 3.5 V8 on carbs, you know you want to!

V8 its gonna be - just need to save up some dosh. Will fit RR axles aswell so discs all round. Might even consider a Defender gearbox. The Bank Manager is gonna love me :D

Been offered a V8 from a P6 complete with gearbox and modified exhaust. In a LWB rolling chassis at the moment, not run for 3 years, so all the mods are done. (oil filter, water pump shaft, engine mounts etc etc) 400 hundred quid. Is this a good price, I wouldnt have a clue. Also been offered a Perkins 4.2 or 4.6 (cant remember which 1) would this fit a series 3.

i think the perkins would be a very heavy engine.

£400 for the V8 sounds great if it's in good condition. Fully reconditioned units can cost upwards of £2k. And they wouldn't come with carbs, etc.
And hey, what's a few mpg between friends...... that is a very few mpg! But the noise alone is worth every penny :D

hey,my V8 cost nowt, did have low oil pressure to start with but i fitted a guage & took the bulb out,£400 for a p6 engine is a bit dear, make sure its had regular oil changes for a start & theres no gunge on the rocker covers

all I know about the engine is its been stood for 3 years in a LWB restoration project thats now not being restored. The owner of the LWB has vanished leaving the rolling chassis in local Landy Repair garage and the owner of the garage wants the space back so he is getting rid of it. He doesnt know the history, only that it ran 3 years ago. Suppose it could be more trouble than its worth then?

I'm with Leadboots on this one I'm afraid.
You can get a decent 3.5 for half that money. For one that's been stood around with an unknown history... 150 quid would be closer to the right price IMHO.

just found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4508202042 .Why would it be painted red? Is it a form of colour coding like light green is recon. etc. or is the red of no significance

The challenge with all used engines is knowing the condition. As I said, it's an OK price if it's good. But if it is unknown, it is worth little more than scrap value. That is the only price worth paying if you can't prove it's condition. Can you get the guy to plumb it in and see it running?
The last of the P6 units were the best ever Rover V8 produced in my view. The only problem was the high CR. It was designed for 5 star fuel. In order to fun it on 95 RON, I had to run mine timed to TDC. Any more advanced and it would pink like crazy. I felt this carb equipped version had better throttle response than the SD1 Vitesse that followed with injection.
