Title: coil help!
Post by: shaun and co on April 06, 2007, 18:21:45
just bought a rrc engined project with a smashed in front end including the coil. Now i have a coil from my old 3.9 v8 disco but will this work in a 3.5 v8 rrc as one is capacitor and one is resistor? also where should the wiring to the coil come from and go to? any ideas gratefully recieved!!

white ceramic block- i assume its a resistor whereas the disco one has a little capactor attatched to it?

Ah, that's a ballast resitor so I assume it has points on it then.  The coil won't work without it (it'll burn out).  The 3.9 will be fully electronic and a 12volt coil, that can be swapped with ther old coil and resestor (resistor styas with coil).  If it's electronic on the older car too then you should be ok with the newer coil.
the capacitor is just a supressor, radio interference, that can be fitted to either car.

sorry for being thick but are you saying that the 3.9 coil will go on the 3.5 and it replaces the ballast as well? and if the capacitor is just a suppresor can i leave it off as i have no radio in the car?!

If the 3.5 has an electronic dizzy then yes, it'll be the same coil.

If it's on pojnts you may find the points don't last very long.

The capacitor is just for electronic noise but I'd keep it if I were you.
