Can anyone tell if the steering damper does anything when on roads

it damps out the small kick back you get through the steering  :roll:

Mike, A question here.
I've been told that if you fit the heavy duty drag link and track rod there's no need for the steering damper because the HD rods are so heavy they dampen the steering.

When you hit a pot hole or other object on the road. The wheel kicks at you with no steering damper fitted.
That's why when off tarmac you don't wrap your thumbs/fingers/hands round the steering wheel.

had heavy duty arms on my racer & had a damper fitted,

SB runs 35's & strengthened bars & a steering damper .......

Make of it what you will :wink:

cheers for that ,you learn so much when you own a landy ,never realy did much with cars till i got my 90

The steering damper is to slow large movement of the wheels, more like what you would see off-road.

The on-road small vibrations are more likley to be absorbed by the bushes in the steering damper, try loosening them and you will see what I mean.

Steering damping is taken care of by the swivel pre-load, hydraulic damper and 2 large mas-dampers in unison, it's a balancing act.

I do know of people who don't use a hydraulic damper, particulary on lifted cars.

That said, on Blue I sometimes have 2 fitted, I get a shaking when accelerating on RH lock as the front RH wheel goes light.

I run a De-Carbon gas damper and HD steering bars and I must admit I don't find any real difference to the original set-up of oil-filled damper and hollow-tubes.
Having said that the steering always was very good anyway but the DC damper wasn't too expensive and the solid-bars make a good cost effective alternative to the tubes as they will never rust out and therefor last the lifetime of the vehicle.
