A 380 diesel gearbox with 380 diesel bell housing is a straight swap.

Hi Liam,

dunno I think there's a bearing on its way out.  I drove up to Geordie land at the weekend, getting all manner of whirry noises and rumbles.  I checked the fluid in it and to my ammusment, could'nt feek any with my finger...  filled it up but when the box was cold it lost 5th... then when the fluid got around it 5th came back.  So I was thinking of swapping the boxes for another less knackered one.  but i only seem to be able to find R380 ones....and even then the Defender R380 boxes are like rocking horse poo.

Thanks Mike!! I suppose a disco box wont fit :(

I must admit - in a Defender (disco is different) - I thought to fit a R380 to a 200Tdi (in place of a LT77s) you need a short bellhousing version of the R380 - not the normal 300 or Td5 variety.

Finding one of these second hand will be harder than finding an LT77!!!

Best bet would be to speak to Ashcrofts - http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk

I wouldn't have said so if I hadn't have done it.
Yes the input shafts are a different length. That's why the bell housings are different.

Bellhousings could be the tip of the iceberg - from memory the floorpans are different as well.

I was involved in fitting a 2.8tgv into a 90 that was originally nat/as, so same fllorpan as yours and we had to change tunnel and floor!!

I'd carry on searching for a good lt77.

Good luck
