Title: 98 3.9 OBD II?

I picked up my disco yesterday and so far so good, however I have already had a couple of backfires on gas. I'd like to check that the AFM hasn't been killed so I was wondering if the dico is OBD II or not and if so where the connector is?

A friend of mine has a reader so it'll give me a good chance to see what it's all about.

Not on a Lucas hotwire injected Disco it isnt!  You can get some basic srror codes from the Hotwire system but not really that much, and im not sure that it's OBD compliant?  The "Thor generation had OBD 2 prior to2001 when it became std in the UK, but that was only because it was sold in the US where it was allredy std.

Thanks so far, what do I need to retrive fault codes and the like from this beastie?

BTW I now know why everyone raves about the V8, ooooooooooohhhh! it's nice :lol:

Sorry I got mixed up, if it's 14CUX/Lucas hot wire than you need testbook or Rovacom.  Shame you are so far away.

To clear the faults you can disconnect the battery for a few minutes.  To diagnose them you need a garage.

Rovacom beats test book into the ground here, you can watch all the signal inputs and outputs on the screen real-time.

Thanks for clearing that up RRB, I'll have to look into getting either one of those systems.

 I really hate having to pay every time I want to plugin, much prefer being able to do it myself. At least it's done properly :D

I'm gonna have to change my avatar now :lol:  only just realised :roll:

If you Disco is an early 98 and therefore a series I (300 style) you do not have to worry to much about the AFM and blow back, mine did this a lot when I first had it converted and the AFM is virtually bomb proof. However the air filter is not, ever with an escape flap I have blown a couple of filters to bits and the lid of the filter box once.

Actually if you get the RRC haynes manul there is a useful section on testing all the sensors for the hot-wire system.

It's good to know the AFM is tough, I think the RRC manual is the way to go as the testbook and rovacom are outside my budget at the mo. especially the testbook :shock:  

The disco seems to be running fine just a little lumpy at low revs, I think I will try a set of plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm for a start.

You will probabaly be able to connect with an OBDII scanner but will get very limited fault codes and none of the manufacturer specific info without some better kit as suggested above.

I've seen the OBD scanner in Halfrauds but as usual they don't say if they are comatible with Land Rover stuff.

At best it will give you some very limited emmisions based info.  You would get nothing on ABS, Airbags EAS etc etc

Those halfords things are ok but TBH it's the proper bit of kit or not at all.
I'm ordering the software and lead for the gas conversion tomorrow, at least this will give some realtime signal outputs from the O2 sensors etc.

hopfully a bit of mild fettling is all it'll need :D  fettlings what LRs are all about isn't it :lol:
