where would i go to get a 200TDi engine fitted to my 90?
might be getting some money due to a family member passing on, and as I use the 90 ofetn I might go for the quick fix and get someone else to do it, but any recommedations as to who might do such a thing and costs involved?
Or if anyone feels they can supply and fit one
-
challenger?
-
Would they supply and fit though?
Don't want the hassle of finding one if I go down this route
-
I'd be interested to find out about this, as i will probably save up for it
In the back of Lro its got a defender 200tdi converion kit and engine for about a grand i would probably think they would do conversions as well!
-
I've done a couple (or three).... (and have got another one in pipeline - not the run of the mill 200Tdi conversion though)
Would happily fit a couple more
Ian
-
might hold ya to that Ian....
-
Would they supply and fit though?
I expect so, give them a call as we can't really second-guess what Challenger may or may not do 8)
-
If i'm very lucky....
Mine will be the non-standard 200Tdi
Now to just take over the world as well Ian
-
Porny, if I thought my old TD would get me there I might have taken you up on the offer, bu if you do hear of an engine available give me a shouot, can always collect via other means of transport
-
I went the easy route and got LR to supply & fit a new one (300TDi) , bargain at £6.5K.
P.S.
I'm a GSer as well, been away from the forum for a while but should be returning for a natter soon.
-
Snooky,
Ian will be doing mine and im MUCH further away than you are
-
bargain at £6.5K.
the 90 only cost £1700
-
can anyone give me a rough idea of price including sourcing the engine, i dont reallly mind the disco or defender version either! as i think i shall start saving now!
Kind Regards

Personally if it's going in a Defender, I would only fit a Defender engine.
Especially if you paying some one else to do it...
A defender engine means every part is avalible off the shelf - and it looks like it was a 200Tdi from the factory... which helps if you ever plan on selling it. 'Most' insurance companies would also be happier if it was a Defender spec engine, rather than a Disco one.
With a Disco spec engine... although intially cheaper, it is more labour intensive to fit... and bits needs to be modified - all the coolant pipe work, electric fan etc etc. IMHO if you are paying someone else to do it, you might as well spend the money on a proper Defender engine and pay less labour.
The other problem with a Disco engine in a Defender is that it looks 'messy'. I would like to be proved wrong, but so far I have not seen a Disco engine into a Defender conversion that looks neat... by that I mean looks like it is supposed to be there. Most of the ones i have seen have been a bodge of pipe work - which will actually restrict performance, a mass of jubillee clips and bodged fixings... thus it means if you need a new coolant pipe you have to try and remember what pipe you used.
To some people, looks are of a lesser importance... the fact that it works is the main thing. But I personnaly want things to look right, as well as working.
If you spent the time, I belive you could make a nice Disco spec engine conversion... but if your paying someone to do it for you it will work out expensive.
Cost wise....
For a Defender spec engine with all the bits (i.e. air filter, rad, intercooler, pipework etc etc) you will be looking at around the £1000 for the engine - if you can find one.
A Disco engine, as well as being more common is also cheaper. You can pick a Disco engine up with all the bits for £500 upwards - usually closer to the £650 mark for a good'un.
Then cost of fitting....
For just fitting, I'd be looking at paying at least £350 for a Defender engine swap... but then if you were doing it properly you'd really want the cam belt done, all new front end seals, new rear seal, new clutch etc etc
So excluding parts, I reckon 'around' the £500 mark.
So probably around the £1800 mark including all the engine, all the new bits, and the engine swap done properly... if you can find an engine.
However... a Disco engine.
You'd have to add the cost of a Steve Parker down pipe (or pay someone to make one) - which I think is around £160... then you'd need new oil cooler pipes, electric fan, some custom pipework etc etc which would put the cost up.
I reckon time wise, you'd be looking at around £500 just for the fitting of the engine and time spent changing bits around... then add on the cost of the exhaust, fitting the new cambelt, sourcing new pipework etc etc... and it doesn't work out that much cheaper than going down the Defender route.
All in if the engine was £600...
I'd budget on at least £1600 by the time you bought the exhaust, the other new bits (cam belt etc etc)... so only slightly cheaper than a Defender.
These are only estimated costs though...

You are only just over 100 miles away... so not that far
(Ser3 J - is over 450miles away!!! ) I could even collect your 90 if easier....
I might know of a Defender spec 200Tdi... but need to check - awaiting a phone call - (Ser3 J - if your reading this it has the LT77 attached  )

My god, you trusted a Land Rover dealer to do something as major as fitting a new engine?
I didn't think they had that in their instruction manuals.

Thanks for that reply porny i shall start saving now and in two years you may hear from me!
In the back of the Lro magazine this months there is is an advert for charles4x4 services, and they have a "this month offer" that has a 200tdi defender conversion kit for £1160 which i am wondering includes the engine because that seems pretty reasonable and would involve everything i would think. I could probably get a few friends to help me however i have never done an engine swap before so would probably be best to give it to someone :?

Id' imagine that does include the engine...
The kit... so basically it comes with rad, intercooler, all the pipe work, exhaust down pipe, adapter for the fuel return pipe, fuel filter, air intake and a few other bits - so everything removed from the donor car. Around the £1000 mark is the going rate.
But for that money I'd imagine it won't have a new cam belt, seals, clutch etc etc... so you would need to add that cost on top.
If you fit a Defender engine, nothing needs modifying... so is literally a bolt together job. The only thing you could change if you wanted to is the fit the 200Tdi spec glow plug timer. Personnaly it's just something else to go wrong - and you could just run the wiring exactly as your 2.5Na is now!

I didn't think they had that in their instruction manuals.
Actually it was a genuine LR kit fitted by a well known non-franchised dealer in Penzance and they made a bit of a pigs ear of it so all the subsequent warranty work was carried out by my local franchised dealer in Milton Keynes. It was ironic because I first asked my local dealer if they wanted the job (the kit has to be dealer fitted to keep the warranty in force) but they said no so I went down to Cornwell, when it went in to my local dealer for the warranty work the new service manager said he would have done it and charged a similar amount amount.
Bearing in mind how much work is carried out (new fully dressed engine, gearbox, transfer-box, radiator, engine mounts, cross-member, exhaust, tunnel etc etc) it was suprising that the supplying dealer said they would only charge £500 less for a DIY fit and of course then I would have had no warranty so I didn't even consider it.

There's a couple of guys who know their stuff, so I'm sure if you were paying it would work out to everyone's benifit.
Only thing I would add is where to find the donor, unless you follow it into a scrap yard or know someone on 3rd part insurance then any second hand engine you buy is going to make the salvage dealer that sell it a fair few quid.
I'd suggest looking around damaged repairable auctions for a complete car, sell off any bits you don't use.
-
if you have the money then why not spend 6.5k.
So would appear to go the disco route your better doing it yourself so you know what pipes to replace in the future and where things might go wrong and if it looks like most people cupboards under the stairs under the bonnet you cant complain.
-
Porny,
If I do come into some money soon I will let you know, i thought you were further away.
So if you do know of some spare engines then let me know and we can sort something out, this all depends on money as always then
