Title: Detroit Lockers? Or not?
Post by: rickharwood on April 17, 2007, 09:08:00
I have a 1996 110 TDi and have been considering fitting a Detroit Locker to the rear (Salisbury) axle and a Detroit Truetrac to the front.

Can anyone give me any advice as I have read that the Locker can cause funny things to happen - ie it only drives the inside wheel or brakes on the outside wheel when cornering. How much of a difference does this make on the road? Is it possible to live with day-to-day?

What are the other options? Does anyone make an LSD for the Salisbury axle?

Personally i'd either stick to the truetrac LSD's or go ARB lockers.

Id say buy ARB.
I ran a lockrite in the zook, it was AWFUL on the road.
Dont bother Id say.

you can get places with a std open diff that you couldnt with a detroit in the rear, they always do what you dont want um do

i've looked at them myself. for what the difference in cost is, i'd just buy ARB's. that way you've got the same handling etc on the road as you've ever had, but have the advantage of a fully locked axle when you need it. no leaking around, no "is it doing what its meant to" situations, just a locked axle.
