Title: Another side exit exhaust question.
Post by: Sharpshooter on April 19, 2007, 21:38:13
My 110 rear exhaust section is a bit peppered. It will need replacing soon. I want to make a side exit exit exhaust to come infront and above the rear arch.

Does anyone know the name of the flanged plate you use to tidy it all up on the body? Or is there a bolt on one, i can fit a peice of flexi between the existing pipe and the exit piece?

Cheers Wayne. :D

You do know they're illegal on a public highway don't you? Exhausts have to exit to the rear or offside of the vehicle. If exiting on the n/s they must  point downwards or straight up above head height and be protected so that they are inaccessible to a pedestrian. They're also an MOT failure.

My 90's STANDARD chimney is on the NS and points straight at pedestrians.
It aint exiting the rear of the vehicle, and it isnt exiting the OS, it isnt pointig upwards, and it isnt pointing especially downwards.

I'm not desputin what you are saying but have you got a link to the document where that lurks?

It comes under the smoke affecting other road users heading in the mot regs and the sharp protruding edges section The standard ones are below knee height and unlikely to be in contact with a pedestrian but once you start to raise it and stick it out thru the body work you start to fall foul of MOT and C&U regs There is a post on landrovernet.com from a guy who knows his stuff which is where I found out it's a no no. I suppose a lot depends how high you take it if it's only a couple of inches you'd probably get away with it.

So they arent ACTUALLY illegal then?

Youd be struggling to get them much above knee height anyway i feel.

My 90 exhaust is in the picture.... complete with my own finisher...

No problems at MOT time (MOT tester even said how nice it was!) - in fact, have never had any problems at all.

I even know people who have gone through an SVA with a side exit exhaust... which is much more stringent than an MOT.

Mine doesn't protrude from the body, and has no sharp edges.

I offer my Humble apologies then. I was considering doing it to my 110 before I got rid and I was told it wasn't legal for road use.

I think its well worth it on a 110.
It would be sods law that the ones who follow the letter of the law would be the ones to get hammered when they followed the crowd.

Sorry i came across a bit bolshy....
